Just came across this Gladys Knight and the Pips Video. I've always thought her vocals just effortlessly flow into this classic.
I know this is totally lip synced but man she just glides through this song... she owns it. Imho..

Not sure if this is supposed to be an appreciation thread, but I'm semi-indifferent toward the GHatP version.

I mean, it's fine, but it's not as good as Marvin's.

I will say Gladys looks very appealing in that video, though - I never thought of her as sexy but that clip changed my mind!

And I do like the classic Pips moves! :D

OK, I'll go on record as being one of the contrarians that likes the Gladys version better than the later but better known one by Marvin. I mean, I love Marvin, but the Gladys one grooves better for me. Differently anyway. You want a great lesser known Marvin track, try his duet with Tammy Terrell called "Good Lovin' Ain't Easy". Love that tune!

Gladys Knight is my all time favorite R&B female vocalist. No one better combined soulful singing with power the way she did, IMO.

I like the Gladys Knight version, too, probably better than Marvin's. I don't know if it's because the latter has received SO much airplay over the years that it's lost some of its impact on me or if I actually prefer the Gladys version on its own merits.

Totally understand Liking Marvin's version, me too!.. but somehow after hearing Gladys' version on my local radio station 15 years ago - her vocals (to me) just take" Grapevine" into a new dimension. .. I never thought of - or viewed Gladys as a Rock or Soul goddess .. but now my world has changed .. something about her dance and the Pips behind her.. I'm for the better after seeeing this vid!!

Gladys' version was the first version to be released in 1967. Marvin's version was an even bigger hit in 1968.

But the very first recorded version was by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. It was recorded in 1966, but not released until 1968. In my opinion, it is much inferior to the other two Motown versions by Gladys and Marvin, but it is interesting to hear:

..Great reply!.. as time goes by I'm drawn back to this era (60's - 70's) .. some how (me included) Gladys got overshadowed at the time... I think I'm going to view this vid whenever I'm felling blue and need a pick me up!

I don't know. BUT, to me, the crowd looks very European. Maybe some German TV show??

I prefer Marvin and Smokey's versions but it's such a great song that you really can't go wrong with any of them.

Your exactly right re the quality of the film. come to think if it.. its amazing quality!. . I guess that's what unknowingly hooked me.
    Gladys is stunning.
God knows we've seen so many great act's with such horrible audio and awful camera angles produced - while being in their prime.

First time I've heard that Smokey Robinson recording...and I can't say I like it very much. There's a reason it got buried in the shuffle!

How about some love for the CCR version? Now that I like!!

Like both Knight's and Gaye 's version. Slight edge to Gaye.
    Both are great.

Gladys: "People say believe half of what you see,
and none of what you hear."

Creedence: "People say you hide from what you see,
Nah, no, not from what you hear."

Point, game and match go to Gladys!

Motown almost always had a bunch of its artists record the same song.
It would release them after some time had passed from its previous foray.
Again, realize Rare Earth's first hit was a re-recording of a Motown song recorded (& released) by the Temptations years earlier.

I love Gladys’ version of this. The drum track is killer. I think Benny was sick that day so another guy did it. Love it.
    Went to #1.
