is that the actual charts? I never look at them but if so thats absolutely ridiculous that one artist can have so many in there. I assume its something to do with doanloads and streaming?

Well it's something about the era of The Beatles and their achivements that weighs heavier. I can't explain why, I can feel it. The Beatles is to popular music what Napoleon is to cake. It's just the way it is. ;)

do they still do the top 40 on radio 1? that would be pretty boring if the whole thing was only made up ed sheeran and coldplay tracks

I've heard the guys name a lot. I had no idea just how popular he was until last week. My local record store must have had at least a dozen copies of his latest album in stock. They usually never have that many of a single record in stock.

Here comes the Grumpy Old Man:

If these Top Five, or Top Nine, or Top Twenty Songs were actually physical singles, records that you could hold in your hand (pun intended), actually had to run to a store to purchase, etc,

If so, Then the Music Charts rankings and proclaimed Achievements are comparable, and quite noteworthy.

But fifty years between, they are not.

We are talking apples and oranges.

The fact that the charts are now largely made up of downloads kind of nullifies any comparison with previous eras, i.e. The Beatles.

However, I hear that the album is the biggest selling on vinyl for 20 years. Now that is something I CAN respect.

I'll add that for The Beatles and other groups of the 60s, 70s, 80s, songs only could enter the singles charts if they were physically released as a single, right? (Please correct me if that's wrong.) Today, any album track can be streamed, and streamed repeatedly, no?

Pitchfork certainly gave the album a shoeing.

For the Bullboards Record Charts, I believe airplay was also a factor to consider, during the decades you mentioned. So, if an album track received heavy rotation on many stations, it actually could make the charts. Eventually this would grab the attention if the record label, and they usually would rush-release a single after-the-fact.
This didn't happen often, but was always possible, in the era of free-thinking Disc Jockeys.
(Hopefully someone can give an example...)

This just in from Ed: "Well, originally I pointed out that fact in reference to England. That I meant more to kids than the Beatles did, or their music at that time. I wasn't knocking them or putting them down. I was just saying it as a fact and it's true more for England than here. I'm not saying that I'm better or greater, or comparing myself with the Beatles as a group or John, Paul, George, and Ringo as people or whatever they are. I just said what I said and it was wrong. Or it was taken wrong. And now it's all this."

Without the physical single and its associated sales, though, it still would not reach the upper echelons of the charts, right? Have there been songs that made, say, the Top 20 in the pre-streaming days that did not exist as a physically-released single?

    I'm outraged.
    Let's organize an anti-Sheeran rally.
Everyone should bring their MP3s of his music, to thrown in a bonfire.

An interesting and impressive achievement by Mr. Sheeran. His music will not be forgotten by the millions of people for whom it is currently hugely important and who will forever associate it with this period in their lives. He is rapidly becoming one of the signature and most important artists for this current generation of people currently in high school and college.

    Good one Harv!

Look this guy isn't bad, he can sing/play/write songs it's not all files & auto-tune. Chart methodology has changed over the years as have consumer habits. No matter what sorts of charts you're looking at, it's an imperfect system.:)
