Honestly, I don't mean to ruffle any feather here! But looking at the first page of this music forum as I write this most of the threads are about: The Clash, The Beatles, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Kiss, Eric Clapton, The Who, The Beach Boys.

I've often wondered who are the big stars these days. If this forum had existed 40 years ago, many of these same (great!) artists would be in the forum headlines. Which leads me to some conclusions that might ruffle some feathers after all so, that said, I'll leave this open for discussion.

    What do you think?

I think it has something to do with the audiophile nature of the place. In an MP3/streaming world, much new music is not up to audio snuff for discussion on a forum like this. The old stuff is getting the audiophile remasters/treatment...

"Nevermind" is 26 years old, the same age "Like A Rolling Stone" was when it was released. This ain't "Logan's Run".

Not sure what "sd;flkj asd asdf;lkj wqutros ghdf;gih" etc. means, Steve. I'm just curious as to why we don't discuss more contemporary music here. Not "why" as in "what is wrong with us?" but rather as "wouldn't it be nice if we did".

Speaking of "Wouldn't it Be Nice". I think I'll go put on a Beach Boys record and stay out of trouble.

And if you really hate this thread ( it's your show, you have my respect) shut 'er down and you'll get no complaints from me.

The way I see it, any meaningful discussion requires perspective, and to gain perspective often requires the passing of time. The older the subject, the more there is to discuss - more different views and opinions, more "scope".

Besides, one gets quite enough of the "big stars" of the day elsewhere. It's good to have a place to go where it is possible to discuss something else altogether, something that feels closer to home, so to speak.

I'm hip to the new sounds, daddy-o, but the old farts have a historical context that lends itself more to discussion. So, while it's rational to say, "Bob Dylan had a bit of an impact,", imagine if in 1997, the board was all, "The Prodigy is pretty much the most important thing that will ever happen."

Edit: Or what Rodney Toady said.

Most people here are interested in good sound quality. That excludes 95% (I'm generous) of new releases of the last 15 years.

Adelle has gotten some press here on the forum.

I've always thought the creative rock stars of the 60's would have done other things, if they had the opportunity. Like video games, computers, smart phone apps, web apps, etc.

So the current generation doesn't have great music, but they other great things like computers and video games, tons of movies, smart phones, etc.

The space between the Beatles and the Sex Pistols was five years. Five years ago Taylor Swift put out Speak Now. Time flies. Who knows?

I think the longterm music fan of a certain age is a bit discombobulated.
We are witnessing the end of an era and a lot are a bit unsure of where music is going.

    Eric Clapton
    Clash Cut the Crap

    The Clash again
    The Who

    Beatles Sgt Pepper

    Paul McCartney

OP has a point. It's the demographics, I assume - contemporary music threads usually fall by the wayside quickly around here.

    Relax, Brian Lux!
The "sd;flx...." stuff means just focus on what interests you, regardless of who the "big stars" are currently or in the past.

If you want to discuss contemporary music, start a thread on some. Don't worry about threads you don't care about.

(I should follow my own advice, actually!!!)
