That's interesting, but I'm waiting for somebody to kill the .PDF file.

They'll just redirect their hatred to AAC instead.

    MP3 isn't dead, it's free.

Exactly right. This will help electronic companies save their money on licensing, Linux distros will include it as a standard and all freeware audio programs including Audacity, Foobar2000, EAC, etc. can include it without having to manually add MP3 support.

MP3 is a crap format though, and considering that with Android devices you can put more storage in them (my phone has 32GB, plus my 8GB iPod), there's better options out that that sound better if you want Lossy to save on file space.

    Compression. Can't you tell?

One can compress PDF files even further in quality to make a smaller PDF with software, especially useful for overtly large PDFs.

Grant Life is a rock, but the radio rolled me!

I may be an outlier, but I still don't think AAC lossy at a comparable bit rate to an mp3 sounds superior. I will continue to use LAME encoded mp3. And, they must mean it's dead to them because the licensing ran out, meaning that they can't charge for the use of the technology or name. AAC is preferable to them because the licensing hasn't run out, and it can be copy-protected.

I think the CD patents already expired a few years ago. It's why you no longer have to use the Compact Disc logo.

If you're talking about FLAC, I just use Foobar for Android. Works great!

Always remember that just because you can't hear a difference doesn't mean no one else can, because many of us can, including me.

just wanted to chime in.. while i use the format mp3, it must be known that i prefer to listen to higher resolution (lossless formats) files, primarily. just a heads-up, for the proverbial record. the mp3 is serviceable at best, and you wouldn't catch me listening to them at home.

I still feel MP3 by way of my I-pod classic is great. The pod cost almost nothing, the music on it was free and the sound quality once run into a good DAC is decent. It's the biggest music bargain i've experienced.

Pdf can use zip compression or no compression at all. It all depends on the settings. If the document contains only vector graphics, jpg compression shouldn't do anything in a pdf.

Correct. And this means more money for the sellers who keep MP3s going, not less. So I think that this only means that MP3 is dead revenue stream for the creators, but it is not dead for everybody else.

I've used PDFs for years (generating them with OpenOffice.org) and have never used compression. One thing that I like about PDF over other ebook formats is that what I intend is what I get (no formatting surprises in my final ebooks).

Well, I'll try to always remember that, but I don't know what that has to do with my personal listening experience.
