The ones I've heard so far are the original WB, the 86 Castle, the 2009 and the 2016 remasters. So far it's a toss up between the 86 Castle and the 2009. Truthfully, I was disappointed with the 2016 version. I find it too bright (too much high end for my taste). Any thoughts? Which are your favorites?

2016 is too bright for me also.

For digital, I think the SACD is best, but the 1986 is not far behind. I also like the 2009.

IMO, the only "Japan SHM" worth discussing is the SHM-SACD. This was made from a UK master tape at FX Copyroom in London.

The standard redbook Japanese SHM discs are just sourced from UK Castle/Sanctuary digital masters.

I came to the 2016 remaster from the original WB CD. The 2016 might be bright if you've never heard the WB, but coming from the WB the 2016 is like a fluffy auditory pillow. If you turn up the WB loud enough you can probably weaponize it and use it to commit at the very least grievous bodily harm. Maybe I just got a bad copy (don't know why that would be though)... I've only ever sold eight CDs because of godawful sound, and that was one of them.

I've thrown bad sounding issues in the trash...If they are not good enough to listen to, why have them take up space? I have no time for crappy sound....especially if they have had the ability and means to do it right in the first place. can't tell you how many have been flung into the garbage. Sab has never been one of them though...

I don't have it in me to throw out a CD, no matter how awful sounding. Hell, I've got one by my favorite band that skips during a certain part of the last song and I've come up with seven reasons to rationalize hanging on to it (stupidest one: I bought it from a friend of the artist). And like I said, I've only ever sold eight CDs because of horrible sound... that takes a lot for me.

One I tossed out was a boot of a FREE concert, where no one in their right mind would have let KOSSOFF onto the stage.....couldn't believe he was up there...Absolutely ridiculous.....Not kidding, it was like someone handed his les paul to a 9 year old that had never ever touched a guitar....It was shocking....into the garbage it went....Rodgers sounded a bit out of it also. Worst Guitar playing I have ever heard.....sad coming from a virtuoso...

I could send you my demos... that concert will no longer be the worst guitar playing you've ever heard. Won't help the concert sound any better and/or recover it from the garbage, though. I don't think you're looking for any of those things to happen though. :nyah:

Nobody I've ever seen has said the SHM-SACD is too bright, but it came out in 2012.

The 2016 is definitely better than the poorly mastered Warner CD, IMO.

But yeah, that ain't saying much.

I've never heard any other versions, I personally like the sound of the 2016. I don't find it bright compared to lots of other CDs (not just the awful WB)... but then again, I have a higher tolerance for brightness than most people here.

The Japan SHM based off the Pearce remaster is all I ever need, that is until they reissue the SACD. I need to hear that. Between the Rhino vinyl reissue and SHM, I'm good.
