The "personal audio" segment (which includes headphones, headphone amps and DACs) has exploded in the last decade.

Missed it. Are these as good as the HD650?

I have asked the same questions before buying - the answer is same bin part numbers as 650's, and the description on Massdrop page clearly states it's 650. Massdrop has been around, and these 6XX's is a mainstay of their business. so - rest assured. As I'm typing this, 6480 people have joinded the drop.

They sent everyone who bought one of these in the first drop new longer cables for free.

Are there any headphones that can compete with these in sound quality for $200?

No. With the caveat that they need to be amped well with a suitable amp to get them to do what they do so well. With a lesser amp they can be kinda meh. With a good amp they redefine your idea of headphone listening.

I'm going to pair these with a balanced cable for my Pono player

Got in on the drop this time. $200 is a great deal for these.

Yeah I have to pass. As much as I want these, I do most of my listening in the car. When I'm not listening in the car, I just have my ATH-M50 or earbuds on. And I don't think my iPod Touch has enough juice to drive them well.

I've been putting off picking up a pair of these for years now, so I might as well spring for then. Whenever they pop up used near this price I never seem to have the spare funds. I've got a pair of Grady 225s that I like, but they're just not comfortable enough for extended listening. But I've made do with them for this long, I can wait another six months.

An iPod Touch isn't going to do it. The HD6xx or HD650 would sound meh. The HD599 or HD598 would sound better than the HD6xx or HD650 when played from an iPod.

The HD6xx or HD650 or HD600 needs an amp like the Schiit Valhalla 2 or a Schiit amp higher in the Schiit lineup for the headphone to do its thing. Or one of the Garage 1217 amps. Or other similar level of amp or better. Few portables and portable amps are able to drive the HD6xx headphones well enough that I'd want to use it. The PonoPlayer can do OK if used in balanced mode.

Open back won't work for me since I listen through headphones at work.

Any recommendations for solid state headphone amps to pair with them @Ham Sandwich ? I've already got a Budgie tube pre, so don't particularly feel the need to add another layer of tubes and don't listen to headphones enough to deal with the expense/trouble of rolling.
