An odd pairing, but Jimmy seems to be having some fun.................

    New to me.

Looks like Joan Jett guitar and Brian Wilson keytar in the evening clip.

Jimmy played with the Beach Boys at both of their 4th Of July concerts in 1985. He sat in with the band for 4-5 songs at their daytime show in Philadelphia (which also featured guest appearances by Joan Jett, John Stamos, and Mr. T), then flew with the band to Washington D.C. and sat in on 2-3 more songs at their evening show.

Jimmy was in the area because he was rehearsing for the upcoming Live Aid concert.

Wow. Jimmy kind of looked and sounded like Marty McFly in Back to the Future on those solos on Lucille. But yeah, he really looks like he's having a blast.

I was there. I believe it was the largest audience to date estimated at 1 million.

Also included a sit in by openers the Oak Ridge Boys

Ask Jimmy and he'll tell it's Phil Collins fault or his guitar tech for tuning issues. Wasn't Jimmy drunk at Live Aid to calm nerves?

Wasn't Live Aid more than a week later? They were all in Philly a week in advance to rehearse for a 3 song set?

For what it's worth, Lucille kind of reminded me of Marty McFly playing Johnny B. Goode...

You think a week is a long time to rehearse after not playing together for 5 years, playing with a new drummer and on top of that planning to do the gig in front of one of that large of an audience? Most people would say they didn't rehearse long enough....

For professionals to play 3 songs they'd played a thousand times before? Yeah, I think a week was way more than enough time, so I don't buy that they were rehearsing for a week before the event - what is the source for this?

There's a great story involving Carl and Mr T on the flight between the two concerts. I laughed in public very loudly when I read it in Mike's autobiography.

LOL, Jimmy getting a bit out there on "Lucille", I bet afterwards Mike was like, "We're never having that guy playing with us again."

 Southern California fashion hit an all-time low in 1985 -- especially for 60's and 70's rockstars. White slacks and a brown braided-belt pretty much signaled the end of the road for Classic Rock. Poor Mike Love, in 1985 he was roughly 19 years past his prime.

Jimmy enjoyed himself so much that he personally stamped autographs for all the Beach Boys and everyone else involved.

In fact, he tirelessly stamped so many autographs that he had to reink his stamper twice. :D

Nah, people can only be "cool" for so long, but being a dork is timeless. :p

I agree 100% -- but, was there a time Mike Love was cool?

No, but I never said he was cool .
I said "people " can be cool but being a dork is timeless . I place Mike solidly in the timeless dork category. :D

I always keep in mind though ..
He sang on a zillion hit records, toured the world countless times singing with a band and hung out with the Beatles in India, etc.,.and we didn't .

So in reality, he's a lot cooler than most of us

Yeah, you're right. I feel a little bad for Mike Love; he will forever be known as the perpetual grouch at the SMiLE sessions. On the other hand, in 1985 he was playing music with Jimmy Page and I was still ringing people's door bell and running -- and there wasn't a girl in sight! That said, he did record Student Demonstration Time, the most un-cool song on Surf's Up. :agree:
