I'm game to see Craig do one more. I don't think Spectre was terrible, but I'd have been disappointed if that was his final bow. Kinda hoping the rumors about Nolan directing are true. A plus if Nolan ends up writting the script too. It would be an interesting combo with those two.

Sort of like a spy who came in from the cold type of Bond? I'm with you.

I for one will be disappointed if Craig doesn't do at least one more. Best Bond since Connery.

  12. All this talk of Christopher Nolan directing a Bond sequel is never going to work until Purvis and Wade are permanently shut out of the film making process, though it would still require the producers to allow Jonathan Nolan to at least co-write the script with his brother. Fans of either 007 or the Nolans would never accept a diluted end product, though the franchise has a long history of creative figures having their ideas compromised, and I fear that Nolan doing Bond will remain a pipe dream. Also, while I can appreciate that Nolan tends to keep using the same established group of actors in most of his movies, surely he must feel that Tom Hardy isn't the best to take on such a major role - maybe a few years ago, but as someone who'd be in his early 40s by the time production starts? At the very least, it would be interesting to see if the producers let Nolan shoot in his preferred IMAX format during key action sequences, plus we'd have the satisfaction of knowing that he'd push for the use of practical effects over CGI (not that Bond's ever had a major problem with this particular aspect, to be fair). The more I think about it, I'd definitely love to see Nolan directing Tom in a treatment where Bond is somewhat older and off his established form, as has been mentioned before... For once, this would give him a legitimate excuse to rely on gadgetry, rather than such solutions being in purely to satisfy classic era fans or because of sponsorship deals requiring a set amount of product placement.

Purvis/Wade only started the writing process this spring - which begs the question as to what the hell EON did all last year? - no way they could deliver anything less than a trainwreck if they had to start shooting late this/early next year to make a 2018 release... I'm willing to wait another year if it means a better film, pity they didn't take that same approach with Spectre.

What I find interesting is that EON have dropped this news just before Daniel Craig is about to start the publicity circuit for Logan Lucky... and you know that after this announcement, every - and I do mean every - interviewer will ask the inevitable question... is this lousy timing on EON's part (which I seriously doubt) or something altogether more strategic?

Whoever plays Bond in the next film - and I'm still rooting for one more from The Craig - I hope both Martin Campbell and Stuart Baird are back behind the camera... and Roger Deakins if they're really blessed!

  15. I'd also love to see Stuart Baird return to the series, and if there's any justice in the world, the powers that be won't turn down a third potential theme song from Radiohead... Spectre was an absolute highlight of A Moon Shaped Pool (or at least the special edition), while Man of War proved it was definitely worth the twenty years this took to finally see the light of day. Saying that, will the band even want to risk being rejected yet again? If anyone's going to be returning, I've heard that Adele is being looked to as a possible candidate yet again, for better or worse. Maybe we'll hear Radiohead over the opening to a Bond movie if ever Christopher Nolan gets to direct, since he's known to be quite the fan, even securing a previously unreleased extended mix of Treefingers for the Memento soundtrack. Curiously, it seems as if Nolan originally wanted to use Paranoid Android in his 2000 film and wasn't able to for some reason, instead getting the far bigger exclusive of being able to feature the longer variation of a song that was still a month away from its official release when the movie first originally hit screens!

Purvis/Wade = the worst thing that ever happened to the Bond franchise; why Wilson and Broccoli keep on hiring them, is a mystery to me.

The best Bond movies of the last 20 years (GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, Casino Royale) are the ones without the lame writing duo or, eg Casino Royale, the ones that were co-written by smart people such as John Logan or Paul Haggis. Yeah, Quantum of solace is not one of the best ones but I blame mainly P/W for its failures.

The one 007 movie solely credited to Purvis and Wade without additional help is "Die another day". Do I have to say more?

PS. They also wrote "Johnny English"....:sigh:

John Logan was (mostly) responsible for the trainwreck that was Spectre... it was his script, his idea; Purvis/Wade were only brought in very, very late to try and salvage a potential debacle and had no time to revise it in any meaningful way. And let's not forget Logan was also singularly responsible for killing the original Star Trek movie franchise stone-cold dead with the awful Nemesis... the TNG crew deserved a much better swansong than that, so did Daniel Craig's tenure as Bond if he decides not to do the next one.

I'm not rushing to defend Purvis/Wade, but The World Is Not Enough was enjoyable and had a solid idea at it's core (what if the Bond girl turned out to be the villain?), had the powers-that-be had the courage of their convictions and not added Denise 'rocket scientist' Richards to the cast, plus hired someone more comfortable with big-budget action films than Michael Apted - in my humble opinion, Michael Caton Jones would have been a better choice for that film - it could have been a classic in the Bond canon.

Die Another Day had a largely terrific first half, then they brought in the ice palace and... yeah, never mind... moving on...

As I understand the situation, Purvis/Wade's original script for Quantum of Solace was binned wholesale and rewritten from scratch once Marc Forster came on board in June 2007, so how much they contributed to the final result is anyone's guess... I wouldn't pin any blame for that film - as much as a soft spot as I have for it - on the writing duo.

Honestly speaking, Purvis/Wade scripting the new Bond film doesn't have me worried, it's if they have a solid idea for it that matters - judging by their recent interviews, it might just be Bond vs The Donald!!! - and that EON let them explore that solid idea without mucking it up somehow... bringing back Paul Haggis again to give it a polish certainly wouldn't hurt either.

Producers are binding their time for the next two years as they're still on the look out for a successor. Fassbender could still be in the running.
