Hmm, 2005, eh? We'll have to compare notes some time on that one, there were some records I really like, but seems not too many of them. Then again, just searched here for some best of 2005 lists, and it actually looks much better than I remember, and better than I have represented on my computer too ... still, below is a pretty strong top 10, with a bunch of others after that haven't been played in quite awhile ... might have to revisit some 2005 albums this weekend, suggestions welcome, CocoRosie playing right now and it's as weirdly charming as ever :)

Andrew Bird - The Mysterious Production of Eggs
    Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
    Electrelane - Axes
Nine Horses - Snow Borne Sorrow
    CocoRosie - Noah's Ark
Antony and the Johnsons - I Am a Bird Now
    Richmond Fontaine - The Fitzgerald
The Mountain Goats - The Sunset Tree
Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene
    The National - Alligator
    John Vanderslice - Pixel Revolt
    Spoon - Gimme Fiction
Smog - A River Ain't Too Much to LoveMy
    Morning Jacket - Z
    Voyager One - Dissolver
Micah P. Hinson And The Gospel Of Progress
The Silver Jews - Tanglewood Numbers
British Sea Power - Open Season
    Harold Budd - Avalon Sutra
    The Decemberists - Picaresque
    Black Mountain - Black Mountain
    Mary Gauthier - Mercy Now
    The Lucksmiths - Warmer Corners
    Editors - The Back Room
    Archer Prewitt - Wilderness
Architecture in Helsinki - In Case We Die

Except Double Nickels and Zen Arcade are part of my argument for 1984, which is when they came out.

As did Let It Be, Reckoning, The Smiths, etc., etc. Greatest year for indie rock ever.

Finch's Say Hello to Sunshine is a great 2005 record, they changed their sound drastically between the first record and this one. Clear Angel Dust-era FNM influence. Avoid the CD master...
If you can't be bothered to buy the record...not my rip:

Hearing this album last year destroyed Sublime for me.

In bold, that's capturing a great deal of what made that year so special for me. I remember catching some amazing gigs over the course of that year as well. A few others come to mind as well:

    Hood - Outside Closer
    Wilco - Kicking Television
    Broadcast - Tender Buttons
Brian Eno - Another Day On Earth
    Deaf Center - Pale Ravine

I took 1985 (peak of 80s pop music, Live Aid), 1995 (last big moments of Britpop), and 2005 (because anything after that year doesn't mean much to me)

Exactly the same years that I picked--jinx! I loved the popular emergence of alternative rock music in the '90s. While I think better albums came out in '91 ("Nevermind", "Out of Time", "Achtung Baby", "Loveless"), I think '93 was my favorite, too, just because of how unusual and creative alternative rock had become after a couple of years in the mainstream ("In Utero", "Zooropa", "Exile in Guyville").

  10. 82, 83 are great
84 is a nadir that is the 80s, punk, post punk, new wave, NWOBHM, etc., all dead, the arrival of pomp with digital synths, gated reverb, etc.,

That's a sneaky good one. It seems like it's right on the cusp of a change in rock music, coming out of the punky, stripped-down early '00s mini-revival of rock (Strokes/White Stripes/Yeah Yeah Yeahs) into something more like the indie rock we have today. That's a lot of great albums.

Born in 80, so I went with 1991, 1992, and 1994. Would've chosen 1993 next. The first half of the 90s were killer.

1991 and 1984 definitely got my votes, they tower over the rest in importance. Third's trickier.

1997 my favorite year. I just seemed to like everything at that moment. Strange phenomenon. Must have been because I was 21.

This is tough for me because I would say that, between 1978 until now, each year had a good amount of important music (to me) that I love. Less so in the last 7 years but still good stuff to be found.

I selected 1994, 1995 & 1997(my Top Pick) with albums from Radiohead, Spiritualized, Suede, David Bowie, Jeff Buckley, PULP, Manic Street Preachers, BLUR, Morrissey, Gene, Stereophonics, Supergrass, James, OASIS, etc.(I realize Pink Floyd released The Division Bell in 1994, but I did not get into their music until 2003-04 and now regret not buying the Pulse Live 2-CD Set that had the blinking light on the case).

Hard to leave out 1993 and 1996(think those were years that Smashing Pumpkins had releases those years, but that 5 Years Period of 1993-1997 was just a Blur-no pun intended, to me of buying a lot of New Music exploring new Music Artists from the UK, and building my CD Collection of FUNK Music from the mid 1970s-early 1980s, bypassing Hip-Hop to instead get the actual Source of the Music that was being sampled by Dr. Dre, Coolio, De La Soul, etc.).

Also, not sure which albums came out between 1982-1984, but had some great music released in those years from Talking Heads, The CURE, Echo & the Bunnymen, Peter Gabriel, Joe Jackson, Prince/The Time, U2, The Cars, The Smiths, XTC, Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Police, etc.
