Why no Audiophile version of Mark Knopfler's "Local Hero" soundtrack?

It's pretty much universally beloved, and all of Dire Straits and Mark's other albums seem to have been pressed in an audiophile version somewhere along the line.

The only things I'm aware of are a Japanese SHM-CD from 2012 and a couple of European HDCDs from 1997. :shake:

Good question. Local Hero and Cal are on the short list of my favorite soundtracks. An audiophile treatment of both would be welcomed.

It's also a movie that should get better treatment, too. It's hard to find any good NTSC format releases. Sigh. Got kinda lost in the shuffle, over the years...

Yes, and I'd love Audio Fidelity to release on SACD 'Screenplaying'. It's a wonderful compilation from his film soundtracks

I'd say it's because those involved in the music business in regard to this relase have determined there is not an acceptable "return on investment" for such a release. It's all about the money not the audio ...............

Yes, I've been begging Criterion, Kino Lorber or even Warner Brothers through their Warner Archive burn-on-demand series to release it on Blu-ray; no luck yet. (Yet Gregory's Girl is available on a region-free UK Blu-ray…)

I'd like to see some of his soundtracks re-recorded from scratch. Local Hero and Cal sound find, but The Princess Bride is awash in cheesy synths strings and such a great and beloved movie deserves a real orchestral recording.

That's very, very dangerous; most everyone that loves that soundtrack would be horrifically offended were a single note to change in sound.

I love the movie, think the score has great potential, and needs a good symphony orchestra to play it.

I have a Gregory's Girl DVD from 20 years ago. Must get that Blue-Ray; it's a favourite of ours!

I remember watching Local Hero a bunch of times in the 80's. My siblings loved it too. I have not seen it in about 30 years...need to check if its available on streaming.

I don't know. I have the "Local Hero" soundtrack on CD but like those who posted on this thread, an AF reissue would be great!

Does anyone know if the US Warner Bros. CD mastering is the same as the European Vertigo?

Why is an “audiophile version” needed? The original vinyl and CD were mastered by Bob Ludwig IIRC...he’s not sufficiently “audiophile”?

Not in many years but back in the 1980's he sure was and the original Local Hero CD, mine is a WG Vertigo, sounds very nice.

I've only the WG Vertigo. Let me know if you'd like thee EAC peak values

Ludwig still does good work when the handcuffs are off.

I have lots of “audiophile”reissues myself, but I guess my point was it’s amazing how “audiophile” labels have managed to convince a substantial portion of fidelity loving enthusiasts the grass is greener on the other side - to the point of wondering why no such “version” exists - even when the grass is green as green can be on this side.

The UK Vertigo CD sounds good to me. One of my first CDs. I love the film.

Haven’t heard the soundtrack in years so had to pull it off the shelf. Happy to realize I have a Vertigo “Made in W. Germany” copy bought back in the early days of CDs. Think I’ll be enjoying this later tonight with a nice Guinness . . .
