Perhaps it's a matter of perception, but to me personally the original stereo mix sounds more mystique and psychedelic than the mono. The mono is less weird, more "normal" sounding,

I agree that the original stereo doesn't strike me as "effectively" as either the mono or this new remix when it comes to conveying the psych elements of the album. I mean all three are great and all three have the "magic" of a 1967 record. But one of the reasons I adore this remix is that it really drives home the vibe and nuances that went into the album's pallete of colors. At least to me. Where a panning technique or something may be lessened, a more dazzling or intricate shift of emphasis on an instrument or a background vocal makes up for it. Overall, I think the bulk of the success of the remix rests on how it brings forth its various multi tracks and its "of the time" aura in a more virile, more emphatic light. If the original stereo was clearly superior to me (and it IS fine, if you don't know the album any other way), then there would be no need for me to love this remix so much. :)

The old saying goes: Pepper in stereo is a psychedelic album, in mono it's a rock album.

What I love personally about the remix is now it's both. :)

But that's just my humble opinion.

Don't you think that the nuances are no more nuances in the new mix, but more like bold strikes? At least to my ears there are no background sounds in the new mix, all is put upfront.

This is the best thing about this remix.

The sound "colors" are heightened and accentuated.

Revolver was Black and White Excellence.

Sgt. Pepper's was Full Blown Technicolor Brilliance.

    This is it, exactly.

    Upfront Bold Strikes.

But not multidimensional with a deep and spacious sound stage.

Possibly, and it may just be personal preference as to how those nuances best work to individual ears. I think the fact that many sounds or tracks on the tape shift upfront or create greater lushness (some of the background vocals in "Fixing A Hole" or the overall magical kaleidoscope of sounds on "Within You, Without You") is the very reason this remix feels more psych/detailed to my ears. The original stereo sounds "hollow" to me by comparison. Especially now in comparison.

Revolver is a black and white movie.

    SPLHCB is a color movie.

I guess we have to agree to disagree, especially on "Within You, Without You". This song actually already sounded brilliant in the original stereo mix, what they did in the new mix is to detach George Harrison vocal from the whole picture (his voice serve as just another instrument in the original mix), and to place it upfront, emphasized and separated from the instrumental layout. Rather tasteless choice, IMO.

Within You, Without You starts out strong in this remix. Giles even allowed some panning!

If the original stereo is "hollow"...then this remix is only surface deep.

More for the eyes than the mind.

The original stereo allows the listener to process and imagine.

The remix tells the whole story like a laser light show, to be passively watched as the lasers lights hit the ceiling of a planetarium.

Unlike the original stereo, where you're outside and you see fireworks in all their depth and movement.

    But both are Quite Sparkly.

Anyone notice, or care, that this new stereo mix always stays in front, like a mono recording?

I played the new Roger Waters album and the sounds sometimes came from the back, although it is obviously a stereo mix. Both recordings have a low dr numbers. The Waters recording is fifty years newer. Played back to back, the difference is strikingly different in this respect. On my system, this new Beatles mix, always stay in front. True to the mono mix, in this respect, I say yes.

I will compare the stereo mix and see if I hear a different presentation. Two of my favorites...

Actually, the original mono mix is more psychedelic than the original stereo mix. But it also rocks harder, too. :agree:

I wonder how much of this is to do with the album covers. An album cover can be strongly associated with, and color (so to speak) perception of, the audio.
