I have been told that this movie will only deal with the kids' era in fighting the demon of Pennywise, and it will not cover what happens when the demon comes back decades later and the now-grown adults have to regroup and try to kill it again. The word is that the second movie will only be made if the first movie is a success. I would rather they stick to this structure for the simple reason that the jumping back-and-forth is kind of a distraction. King himself has said that he has come to regret it, many years after he wrote the novel.

He was, but I have to say new actor Bill Skarsgård (who plays Pennywise as a younger character) is creepy as hell and extremely effective in the trailers. They've apparently set the new movie in the late 1980s/early 1990s, so I guess the idea will be the contemporary part with the grown characters as adults will take place in 2017, about 30 years later.

So excited about this. I'm not going to sit here and pretend it's going to be a masterpiece because it isn't. But we all like different things. I love Stand By Me, The Lost Boys, Stranger Things and of course the original I.T tv movie. These sort of films make me happy. It's nostalgia really. Takes me back to being a kid and the adventures I had! These sort of films while at times can be quite sinister really put a smile on my face.

I'm glad they decided to just focus on the early part of the story. The characters would be exactly my age then. I was in grade school in the late 80s and early 90s. The book and original TV series (the parts with Tim Curry anyway) scared the holy hell out of me back then. I think Skarsgård looks really promising. He's obviously making Pennywise his own character. I saw flashes of Heath Legder as the Joker. I got chills when he said "take it."

It's certainly easier to follow told in a linear fashion, but, on the other hand, we're not exactly talking Remembrance of Things Past here. I reread the book a couple years ago - it was one of the few King novels I hadn't reread, and I mainly blame the TV series - once I've seen John-boy and Jack Tripper play the main characters, it's hard to recapture the feeling of the book, but I was surprised how much I enjoyed it and how carefully and logically It's origin and purpose were explained.

What most impressed me, though, were the early chapters when the present day characters were contacted to come back. And maybe if they make the second half, they'll film those scenes and they'll be terrific, but they can't possibly have the foreshadowing effect they did on the book.

All that being said, these trailers are really good.

I have to say, the thing with the dead kid telling his brother "we all float down here," and Pennywise the clown in the flooded basement floor with his eyes just above the water level... that is some scary ****. If they go for an R, this will be the stuff of nightmares.

I just looked it up (pun intended- hehe) on the MPAA website and it's rated R. :)

There ya go. I can't think of a lot of movies where the main cast is 13 or under, but it's all rated R.

Let's hope that, unlike the book or the 1990's adaptation, that the kids actually act their age (11/12) instead of older than their years young teenagers. For me, when it comes to IT and Stand By Me/"The Body", I really have to suspend my disbelief- the kids act more like 15 or 16 than 12...smoking, swearing, talking about sex etc...my stepson is 12 and he generally acts like it. Mind ya, he'd have to face the wrath of my wife if we caught him smoking or swearing:laugh:

We might have different cultural backgrounds: the kids in It act very much like the kids I knew when I was that age in central Florida in the 1960s, and that includes the cursing and sex discussions, as well as the propensity for serious mischief. I still think we hung onto our innocence pretty well, but I think nowadays when there's midget-torture-snuff-porn on the net, there's a greater danger for kids in modern times. I did know some 13-year-old kids who were heavy smokers during the 1960s; at least one of them is already dead from health problems.

Could be a cultural difference between kids in Canada vs the US. I've been to certain parts of Canada and I could see kids there being a bit more wholesome. 12/13 y/o kids would be around 8th grade level and yeah, where I'm from everything was going on.

Yeah, in Canada 12/13 year olds would be in grade six or seven. More wholesome? Well, that's Canadians all over, isn't it?

Entertainment Weekly has a story on their website about the first group of critics who were allowed to see the film and post their impressions.

It looks like it's going to be as good as the trailers.

Just got back from seeing "It" and "It" is fantastic. This is one of the best Stephen King movies and I enjoyed it better than the miniseries, though my memory on that is foggy. I do remember liking the miniseries when it aired on TV. Bill Sarsgard is also fantastic as Pennywise, maybe even better than Curry was. All the kids were really good and had good chemistry together. The movie had a good mix of horror, laughs, scares and suspense. Takes place in the late '80s with quite a few references/one-liners to the '80s. I can't wait for part 2 when they are adults.

If you're seeing it in 4D, doesn't that mean you've already seen it in addition to seeing it in the future?

Haha....You ever been to a 4dx? It's amazing stuff. Like being at a theme park. Rain falling on You, wind in you face and all sorts of ****!

Anyway.........Just got back from seeing it and it is indeed excellent. Much scarier than the TV movie and probably the jumpiest film I have ever seen.

4DX is a motion picture technology owned and developed by South Korean company CJ 4DPLEX, a part of the CJ Group. 4DX allows a motion picture presentation to be augmented with environmental effects such as seat motion, wind, rain, fog, lights, and scents along with the standard video and audio. As such, theaters must be specially designed for and equipped with 4DX technology. The experience was introduced commercially in 2009 with the release of Journey to the Center of the Earth in Seoul, South Korea.[1]

Well worth seeing. Really liked the new Pennywise. Kids in the cast were quite good.

One thing that took me out of the movie a bit is that it's set in New England but was very obviously shot here in Canada. The Waddell Hotel, which is visible in many shots, is in Port Hope, ON. I found myself saying "I've been there!" a few times during the film.
