There is a lot of slang, and period slang might be even more obscure at times, the pimps have their own slang, the bookies have theirs, the working girls on the stroll have theirs, plus customs between them like offering cigs to those already on a certain corner or block.

I noticed this more in episode 2. I think the dialog was mixed down in comparison with the sound effects and music

I found the dialogue in ep2 hard to hear and understand as well.

Ditto. I kept rewinding and turning on CC to catch what was said. But I don't like to have that on the whole time as I find the text block distracting.

I had the same problem. Mixing the music too loud and the dialog too low is something I've noticed a hell of a lot in recent years.

Anwan Glover - Slim Charles (blink and you'll miss him so far)

Good eye. Snoop needs a part on this. I like when people from the wire play the same character on a different show like Luit. Daniels on Bosch and Major Rawls on the affair lol.

Really surprised by the amount of gratuitous female nudity in `The Deuce'. Not offended
at all, mind you - just surprised.

There's gratuitous male nudity as well. I'm more surprised by how explicit it is in brief flashes.

Hard to call nudity gratuitous on a show about porn and prostitution.

  11. Bingo! That will be what it is. I was continually adjusting the TV volume through the episode. Very annoying.

I don't think the nudity is gratuitous, which I take to mean completely unnecessary or inappropriate to the subject. This show is about prostitutes and porn. It would be pretty contrived to do that WITHOUT nudity.

The sex/nudity often feels gratuitous on a lot of HBO shows, but it seems pretty integral in this case...

It was especially hard in the scenes involving the union guy and the mob. I'm not sure what deal was made, because I couldn't make out most of the dialog

What was great about the actor playing Rawls on "The Wire" turning up in "The Affair" was that AGAIN he was busting Dominic West's balls :D

Yes, absolutely. David Simon actually knows how to produce great TV.

And if you're an "Orange is the New Black" fan, you'll notice that one of the hookers (seen very quickly so far) also plays an inmate on "Orange". She has a very distinctive gap in her front teeth ...Olivia Luccardi

"Vinyl" was good, but could have been better. I wanted to like it more than I did. Still think a fatal flaw in that show was a lack of humor...even very serious shows like "The Wire" and "Mad Men" and "The Sopranos" had moments of laugh out loud humor

True. I thought Vinyl was slightly better than True Detective Season 2.

All this talk about unintelligible dialog, this child of da Bronx has zero problems understanding what's being said! It's all about the authenticity baby! Fuhgedaboudit!;) Seriously, Simon is a stickler for authentic regional dialog and accents. I remember having difficulty understanding the dialog in Treme at the beginning. Got easier to understand as it progressed, it's funny how we acclimate. When I revisited the series I had no problems understanding at all.

It's not that the dialog is unintelligible, it is when you can hear it. The sound mix is just lousy.
For the record, I'm from Brooklyn, and most of the people I hung out with sounded like characters on the show.:)
Hell, most of the people I hung out with could have been characters on the show.

Same here- Brooklyn born and raised. And spent TOO MUCH of my wayward youth in Times Square. But this was just bad mixing- my wife kept asking me to turn up the TV to maximum volume and it was still hard to understand !

You are right - `gratuitous' wasn't the word I should have used. What does bother me about this show is the overt
and unrelenting cigarette-smoking by just about every character(!). I lived through that era and while smoking
was far more prevalent than it is today.....well, it wasn't as obvious as `The Deuce' portrays. Unless NYC was
    different.

Isn't that what CC is for? I use it a lot these days, and not because my hearing in necessarily poor. But with poor audio mixes, actors mumbling, and/or having undecipherable accents, CC has become an automatic for me.
