Not a big fan of westerns, but "Silverado" is one of my all time favorite films. There should have been a sequel.

Tellyawhat, last week I re-visited Lonesome Dove (lost my wifi/cable during the hurricane so I pulled out the dvd!) I've seen it numerous times and never tire of it. Possibly Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones finest work. It is the epitome of what a great western should be. What's especially curious to me is how awful the sequels were. The exact opposites in every way to the original! LD and it's sequels are perfect examples of Hollywood at it's best AND worst!

I just don't understand why Hollywood does make some new westerns. I think the audience is there. I love a good western -- even if its portrayal of the frontier is nothing but pure myth.

The music is almost a character in the movie; it's so important to so many scenes.

You're right. It's true. I dig westerns. I have 1,500 of them in four bookcases consisting of 8 shelves each. The order is chronological 1902 to today, alphabetized under year. I keep upgrading, replacing the DVD's when a blu-ray comes out. I'm wondering how I'm gonna find the shelf space, because I keep adding more. I've started buying German blu-ray of American westerns that haven't been released in the USA, they maintain the original soundtrack, are generally region-free, foreign language subtitles are optional, and the image quality is a vast improvement.

Inserted into the appropriate place is the occasional paperback tie-in or novelization. A paperback is just the right size to sit next to a DVD or blu-ray on a shelf.

I read Lonesome Dove a couple years ago, I didn't know what to expect or even think I'd actually it finish it but was blown away; easily one of my favorite books. I watched this TV mini series right after and thought it was great (though the special effects were sometimes hilariously dated). I'm surprised someone hasn't re-made it yet; I suppose it's just a matter of time?

Totally agree about Lonesome Dove, the book is outstanding! I've read it 2-3 times (along with the sequels and the prequels!). I don't think there will ever be a remake of the movie but hey, I never thought that a remake of True Grit would be made, let alone a better version!;)
