So I was tooling around Twitter this evening without anything better to do and noticed this post: The 86 Most Rewatchable Movies Of All Time. I clicked it before I noticed who put together the list (BuzzFeed). I decided to scroll through the list and was kind of shocked at how the list didn't really match anything resembling what I would consider to be 'rewatchable'. Of course, everyone has their own perspective on such a subjective topic as this.

But I still could help but think to myself how "off " that list seems. I consider to myself to be something of a cinephile; I've seen roughly 90% of the movies on that list at least once. And of that 90% there's maybe less than a dozen I would ever want to sit through again. And that's not passing judgement on the merit of the film as piece of art. That's a tacit admission of "I got it – I'm good". I don't need a 2nd visit with Cher from "Clueless" or the boys from "Hot Tub Time Machine".

So, that got me to thinking, without really thinking, what movies would I consider the most 'rewatchable'? My definition of that being if you're clicking around on cable tv and it comes up you have a hard time stopping it and you find yourself watching it even if you are coming in at the middle or even three-quarters of the way through. Or, a movie that simply never fails to tickle your funny bone or stoke your imagination. And, is so ingrained in your psyche that you enjoy watching it out of anticipatory delight.

These movies are the absolute first to come to mind for me:
    • The Godfather
    • The Godfather Part II
    • Caddyshack
    • Groundhog Day
    • Star Wars '77
    • The Empire Strikes Back
    • 12 Angry Men
    • Dr. Strangelove
    • GoodFellas
    • Casino
Some I would classify as being among my personal favorites, some I would classify as examples of high art and some are enjoyable for unclassifiable reasons. They are not, necessarily, what I would consider to be the "Best Films Ever" or "My Favorite Movies Ever". Although, some might be.

Simply put, these are the most 'rewatchable' movies, in my estimation.

    What's your list?

If basic cable is to be believed, then apparently The Shawshank Redemption, and A Christmas Story.

Reading the list naturally betrays the target demographic of of this little bon-bon of clickbait; checking the names of the fake participants brings it on home. What Ebert-lovin' cinephile lists a Katherine Heigel film for any reason - heck, I wouldn't even suggest one to fill a list of Katherine Heigel movies. The editor was clearly looking for estrogen here.

Don Johnson and Rebecca De Mornay starred in this unbelievably bad court-room drama called Guilty As Sin. I can't stop watching it.

Many great movies by the posters. I will add:

    Snatch
    Empire Records
    That Thing You Do
    Amelie
    Michael Clayton
    Planes, Trains & Automobiles
    Se7en
    American Beauty

Edit: I just looked at the official list. I would like to make a list of the worst lists and put this at the top but I would have no idea what would come in second.

First one that came to mind is Atom Egoyan's The Sweet Hereafter. I haven't seen many movies that reward repeated viewings like that one.

From that article is sure shows what generation responded.

What about the 'old' epics like Ben Hur, Spartacus, El Cid, Giant, Gone With the Wind....

Is it just me or do others here have an issue now with Goodfellas? Loved it when it came out but don't like it that much now. I think it could be Liotta but I can't put a finger on it. I still really like Sasino though.

  22. For me a key element of a rewatchable movie is that it's more character-based than plot-based, because you can spend time with characters many times but once you know the mechanics of the plot, a heavily plot-centric movie can get kinda drab when watched again. Comic elements and a lack of romantic subplots to slow things down also help. Having said that, some of my faves are:

    Goodfellas
    Repo Man
    Fast Times at Ridgemont High
    Fight Club
    Trainspotting
    Rushmore
    Dazed and Confused
    Before Sunrise
    Dr Strangelove
    Casino
    Boogie Nights
    Slap Shot

Among non-music documentaries, I've found Bukowski: Born Into This to be particularly rewatchable, along with the unrated version of Wadd: The Life and Times of John C Holmes.
