i was visiting family in cinci over the weekend and stopped by colemine/plaid. finally picked up soul slabs vol 1 along with a a few rando used lps. BIG thumbs up on the soul slabs. anyone on the fence, go for it.
As sad as I am about the passing of Sharon and now Charles, I can't help but also be concerned about how the passing of Daptone's two biggest stars will affect the company's, uh, health.
Yeah me too, though obviously it’s early and need time for things to settle down. They have the movie and soundtrack coming. I really liked the Olympians but the wick stuff isn’t my thing, the como mamas was a disappointment. I think stuff like the Kesha song helps pay the bills for now. They should have some posthumous releases they can do for Charles and Sharon even if it’s just b sides and scraps of a live album.
You didn't like the Como Mamas record? It grew on me steadily but I do have a soft spot for gospel. The Frightnrs dub album is gonna be great, but once again, deceased frontman. I do like the Mystery Lights album so I'd be happy for another. And of course they still have a stable of excellent musicians. It certainly wouldn't hurt them to scout some talent though. I hope they pull through more successfully than ever.
I'm really hoping that Saun & Starr can find some more footing with The Dap-Kings. Also, I'd love to see Binky do an album of his material. The loyal fans are there, but like @guidedbyvoices said, it's gonna be hard for them to figure out what to do until the dust settles. I'm with Daptone all the way.
I love the como mamas single but the album just didn’t do it, some songs go on and on and not in a good way, and a few songs have painfully off key vocals that make me cringe. Really wanted to like it but I just don’t.
I love me some Budos. Really hoping for a new album from them soon. The live RSD release was amazing.
Saw them about a month ago. There was some heavy stuff in the set that didn't sound familiar, so it's conceivable that they're working on a new record or will be soon.
I'd love to see another Saun & Starr album, and told Saun that on Facebook. Their sole album is a real gem!
Colemine has a few new things coming out on 10/20, the full Ikebe LP being one of them. Aaron Frazer, drummer and one of the vocalists for Durand Jones & The Indications (he's the one singing falsetto on "Is It Any Wonder"), has a gospel 45 coming out on that date under the name Flying Stars Of Brooklyn, NY. I wrote a piece on it/him for Wax Poetics that I'll post once it goes up. Should be in the next couple of weeks. That 45 is really strong.
Dap-Kings guitarist and radio DJ, Binky Griptite, premiered a new Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings song this morning titled “Matter of Time” Sounded fantastic! Can’t wait for its release!
excellent! can't wait. but does this mean 'living on soul' wont be out for the holidays? thats a bummer if the case.
It does seem unlikely. That said, glad to be getting one more Sharon album. Wonder if Call on God is the same version as the music bonus track or a new version. Glad to have it lossless either way
Man, this new Colemine 45 by The Flying Stars of Brooklyn NY (lead by The Indications' drummer, Aaron Frazer) is outta sight!
...and while I'm at it; how righteous is this clip of The Indications? Aaron's falsetto is pure silk. DAMN!
I got the two 45s and the Ikebe Shakedown LP and have only spun the LP so far. Need to get on those 45s.
I saw your sweet-lookin' clear slab of the Ikebe Shakedown LP up above, man! I've got that one here waiting to be spun, too. Same with the JR Thomas 45.
