Yeah, I was able to grab the RSD mono so I think I'm all set. Another release that could have been so much more.

At least it isn't an overpriced, bloated box set this time. It easily could have mirrored the debut album box set.

I tend to agree with the cynics on the Doors releases, but this Strange Days is simple enough. I'm all in.

Also glad they didn't throw both mixes on one disc (if it had fit). I hope the stereo version impresses.

Why not release the rest of the Matrix tapes not covered on the debut album deluxe on this set?

I didn't want that at all - ONLY because I am holding on to an ongoing petition for a full Matrix Tapes collection.

I think it's safe to say the debut set must not have met their sales expectations or else the SD set would've mirrored it. I'll bet it was at least tentatively planned with a 3rd disc of Matrix material but sales of the first set didn't support that plan. I don't buy that they care what we say. Only that they care what our money does.

I'd certainly have preferred a well done set with some nice unreleased studio material, but at least the mono mix is available for a reasonable price unlike the debut.

The rest of the Matrix material would've taken up a couple more discs and had repeated songs. They wouldn't put that on a set like this. At most, they would've put another 40-50 minute sampling of tracks and a bunch of material would still be missing. A complete Matrix set is in order. And so is another go at mastering it.

rnranimal is correct. By the way here is the Matrix material that is known to exist. As you can see, it needs a full stand alone release. I'm glad they didn't try to tether another Matrix sampler CD to the Strange Days box like the cynical approach used with "The Doors 50th" earlier this year.

    March 7, 1967 Tape # 1:

    1.) Backdoor Man
2.) My Eyes Have Seen You
    3.) Soul Kitchen
4.-5.) Jam* (Note: James Healey stated this "Jam" is two instrumentals totaling approximately 16 minutes, never before released. They don't even circulate on the bootlegs. It has not yet been revealed what these two songs are. Healey did not recognize them.)
6.) Get Out of My Life Woman
    7.) When The Music's Over
    8.) Close To You
    9.) Crawling King Snake
10.) I Can't See Your Face in My Mind
    11.) People Are Strange
    12.) Alabama Song
    13.) The Crystal Ship
    14.) Twentieth Century Fox
    15.) Moonlight Drive
    16.) Summer's Almost Gone
    17.) Unhappy Girl

    March 7, 1967 Tape # 2

18-19.) Woman is The Devil / Rock Me
    20.) Break On Through
    21.) Light My Fire
    22.) The End

    March 10, 1967 Tape #3

23.) My Eyes Have Seen You
    24.) Soul Kitchen
25.) I Can't See Your Face In My Mind
    26.) People Are Strange
    27.) When The Music's Over
    28.) Money
    29.) Who Do You Love?
    30.) Moonlight Drive
    31.) Summer's Almost Gone
    32.) I'm A King Bee
    33.) Gloria
    34.) Break On Through
    35.) Summertime (instrumental)
    36.) Back Door Man
    37.) Alabama Song

Fragment: March 9, 1967 (I'm guessing they will include this on the box set as a bonus track)

38.) The End (survives as a fragment, as Peter Abram recorded the March 10 show over the March 9 show. Only a few minutes of The End survives from March 9, but includes some wild poetic imagery.)

Same here. I expect the original mix is the same type as the recent debut re-release - Acoustic Sounds/Analog Productions digital transfer.

One oddity about this Strange Days 2 CD release: the original album has a run time of 35:25. They could have included the mono mix on the same CD as the stereo mix. But instead they made it a 2CD set.

Is the whole mono album a dedicated mix? I seem to remember only a couple songs were.

  16. If no other material, why a two CD set? Both mono and stereo album mixes would fit on one CD.

Edit: Monk beat me to it!

There were rumors and stuff but in the end it was considered to be a dedicated mix, yes.

Botnick also remastered the original mix in 1999 for the 'cube' box.

There has been some confusion about this here over the years, because around 2006-2007 @Steve Hoffman made a couple of comments to the effect that he had "discovered" it was mostly "clever fold downs" except for a few tracks:
Love - Forever Changes: 2001 reissue query re track 9
Love - Forever Changes: 2001 reissue query re track 9
    DOORS Strange Days mono-mix

But then around 2013-2015 he commented that his previous conclusion was contradicted by the engineer's logs and it is actually ALL dedicated with NO folds:
Doors "LOVE ME TWO TIMES" 45 "hit" mix, best edit in Rock history? & "Touch Me" 45 mix, Stereo King?
Doors strange days mono vinyl reissue April 2015

They can only learn one lesson at a time, I guess. Not making ridiculously inaccurate claims in the promo blurb is a lesson for another day. We'll see if it's repeated on the sticker or not.

Based on the fact that they released the sampler on the debut album box set and the RSD release, I suspect we will finally see the complete box set in 2018, but with The Doors, one never knows.

I wish they'd now instead mirror this with a slimmed down version of the debut, all I'm interested in is getting the mono mixes on CD.

There is a 3 disc version from Japan with the stereo mix, mono mix, and Matrix recordings.
