I just checked out the very last weekly Billboard chart of the 80s and went down from #1 and went with the first song I can't recall...Cher - Just Like Jesse James at #8. I am checking it out now and I didn't even have to listen for a minute before I could smell Diane Warren's stink all over it. It sounds like "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" by Aerosmith.
XTC has a waaaay bigger fan base then you might think. And as far as 'Mayor' goes, it's played frequently on the SiriusXM channel 'First Wave.'
When a band remains popular beyond its demise, it stands to reason that their singles and hits do so as well.
This thread is majorly hitting me in the sweet spot. So many great songs mentioned on the first page alone. I'll jump in:
I was in a bar and a few years ago and this extremely drunk Irish guy named "Marco from the North" put this song on repeatedly and bellowed along, trying to get people to join in. Maybe this isn't that universal an experience, but lord knows I'll never forget this song.
I don't know about SiriusXM or what's playing overhead at the grocery store, but one of my favorite Petty singles would seem to fit this thread. I don't think he even included it on the Playback box:
