Thanks so much for that, very informative. I wish he'd shown what guitar he was playing. Looked like a Martin 000-28 which I believe was the model Nick had at some point, definitely by Pink Moon. Still, I'm not sure about the Martin(s) Nick owned. I've seen reports of the 000-28 and/or D-28 maybe identified by Martin warranty records or music store tags/receipts/records. The D-28 wouldn't fit into that guy's theory that he used a small body guitar.

Yes. Strange the sacd comp came out and not the subsequent first three studio albums. I think the SACD comp sold badly hence the non appearance of FLL/BL/PM.

The mystique surrounding 'Pink Moon' draws people in and what happens next is often slight disappointment with how undeveloped the songs seem. You have to fill in too many of the dots yourself. It's really only half an album.
I eventually did the hard work and now it's my favourite. Though there's still one song that I wish I could look forward to more in the sequence, but too often I wish I were hearing the gorgeous opening of 'From the Morning' instead of the impenetrable message of 'Harvest Breed'. I know eventually it will hit me. Has anyone gone through something similar?

 

Absolutely. I find his music timeless.

I know he liked ( worshipped) Francoise Hardy.

Mojo Magazine did a Nick Drake profile focusing on his influences and greatest loves and mainstream rock was more or less in third place after folk and classical music. Dylan's Blonde on Blonde (esp the two long epics) was the last rock album he played regularly and the two instrumentals on Beach Boys' Pet Sounds were a huge influence on how he wanted Bryter Layter to pan out. Those are the ones that stuck out from that article.

I'd throw in some Brazilian bossa~nova. I'm sure his sister had more contemporary albums.

Wonder if he was familiar with Kevin Ayers another public school boy.

 

His mother was a songwriter, I think she influenced him a lot - I think her songs were compared to Noel Coward, if I remember correctly.

Discovered Nick Drake in college in the 60s. I think it must have been through reading about his John Wood Sound Tecniques or Joe Boyd or John Martyn connection - it’s been decades! Started with Pink Moon. Loved the album cover. Disliking orchestrations I found his first two albums disappointing. Sold the LPs when like many idiots who favored convenience of CDs over sound quality of vinyl. Hate to think what those original LPs would be worth today. But being a slob, they would have been marred by scratches, cigarette ash, spilled Coke etc.

 

Didn't he play a early fifties Guild acoustic?
