Lon Chaney Jr. and Louise Allbritton, in a promotional still for Universal's Son of Dracula (1943). Very underrated film, IMO.
James Rolfe's review of the Hammer Dracula series: One thing I always appreciated about these films was that each entry maintained continuity for most of the series.... I believe it was only the last 2 or 3 films that were sort of "stand-alone" entries.
Chaney played Dracula, Lugosi played the monster (both vastly inferior to the originals!). Karloff never 'crossed over'. I think a young Karloff would've crushed it as Dracula!
My first Dracula movie, and still one of my favorites, was THE RETURN OF DRACULA(1958)with Francis Lederer and Norma Eberhardt. Ms. Eberhardt(Mrs. Claude Dauphin)was related to a schoolmate of my Brothers'.
"Dracula Prince of Darkness" my favorite, saw it as part of a triple feature at the Drive-In, with my Dad. Must have been '66 or '67. Played along with a Mummy picture ,and a Frankenstein pic also. Loved those Hammer films. Saw a ton of Horror/ Science Fiction pictures with my Dad. It was our "thing". Mom didn't like horror films, and my younger brother was prone to nightmares, so he always stayed home. Childhood memories.
In the 70s I was watching it with a bunch of classmates, and they commented on how the romantic male lead sounded like Cary Grant.
Thanks for the heads up. I'll check it out. Actually have it on a VHS, from many years ago. Good flick. If Pop was still alive, I know he'd watch it.
Recorded and watched 'Prince Of Darkness. I'd never seen it. Didn't care for it. I remember seeing, and very much enjoying a Hammer/Lee Dracula flick when I was a kid. Peter Cushing/Van Helsing was in it. It ended with Drac being exposed to sun rays after an epic battle with Van Helsing. As a kid I'd never seen anything like it. This flick last night he got beat by sinking into water(?). How anyone could list this as a favorite is beyond me.
