    As the title says.

Really, this is just an excuse for me to ask you all how to pronounce Davies properly, but as per the title of the thread what are some other artists' whose names you've been unsure of?

As for Davies, is it "Dave-ees" or "Dave-iss"?? I've heard it pronounced both ways.

The Davies family and the rest of Britain pronounces their name Dave-is. It's Americans who can't help themselves to pronounce anything other than Dave-ees.

Jaki Byard: I know Jaki is "Jackie", but is the last name BY-erd or by-ARD? I believe the latter, based on the title of a tribute LP, but I'm not 100% sure.

I have also heard that Jackie McLean pronounced his name mi-KLEEN, not mi-CLANE, but I'm not sure of that either.

Then there's Grachan Moncur III...or all the Irish musicians Van Morrison works with (e.g. Fiachra Trench).

It's originally an Italian name, pronounced "Imbroolya", but in Australia and North America it's probably pronounced as it is spelt.

  12. Dave also pronounces it that way as I recall. He and Ray differ on that as well.

I think Glynn Johns is pronounced Jones.
I think Bjork said her name rhymes with jerk.

I'm sure countless people have struggled with Yngwie Malmsteen.

Correct. Her full Icelandic name is Björk Guðmundsdóttir (the ð sounds like the English th). Her surname means "Guðmund's daughter".

Not exactly on the topic (more a case of intonation than pronunciation), but for the longest time I couldn't tell if Smashing Pumpkins depicted an action ("we're smashing pumpkins") or a collective ("we're some smashing pumpkins"). Actually the article "the" only seems to have appeared on their third album cover. The same for Manic Street Preachers. In my mind they're preachers on Manic Street, but I guess that's not what they wanted to say with the name.

Partly because Mr. Malmsteen himself uses a pseudo-American pronunciation of a pseudo-Swedish name. Ask a Swedish person to say "Yngve Malmsten" and you get something else!

Oh jeez wow you're right about MSP. I never noticed that til now. I always did the same and thought of them as preachers on Manic St. But the other interpretation makes a lot more sense, haha.

With regard to The Kinks, Davies = Davis, the former being far more popular in many parts of the UK, especially Wales (from where I hail).

Talking of Wales, how many of you can pronounce:

Llwybr Llaethog (The Milky Way) or Y Trwynau Coch (The Red Noses)?

Is it pronounced just as it looks, or is it (as I heard David Letterman say it one night) Tootsie Bear?
