R.I.P Phil Miller (Matching Mole, Hatfield & The North)

The excellent Canterbury Scene guitarist Phil Miller has sadly died, aged 68.

Aww, that's a shame. I first heard of him with his guest slot on this Caravan LP before he and Richard Sinclair took off for Hatfield.

 

Sad news. I've been on a big Matching Mole/Hatfield kick lately and he certainly made some choice contributions. I love the sinister fuzz guitar work here.

 

He was great with National Health too.

 

Loved his touch on the Hatfield and Matching Mole records. Truly an underrated and tasteful player. RIP.

Robert Wyatt said something to the effect that Phil Miller was the only electric guitarist that played electric guitar the way it should be played in a band.

I admit to not "getting" his playing when I first heard it on the first Matching Mole LP. His compositional ability was just as important, I feel.

 

Now, this is very sad indeed... Actually, it must be one of the most devastating musician deaths for me in quite a while...

Some of my most cherished gig memories are from Phil's shows or shows featuring him; I was fortunate enough to catch In Cahoots a couple of times (playing to a mere handful of people which made me feel all the more privileged to be there) and one of Hatfield and the North's 2005 reunion performances. Also, there aren't many musicians who appear on so many of my all-time favourite albums as Phil Miller.

Sad news. RIP Phil.

I found this LP a couple of months ago: 2 unique, genuine musicians.
Now they're both gone, him and Lol.

 

Miller in the Miller/Coxhill duo was Phil's elder brother Steve who's been dead since December 1998. Phil appears on this album, though...

 

So sad to her this news. Phil Miller's guitar lines tie together so much of the Canterbury scene music I love, like a bright thread running through a rich tapestry.

I was similarly moved to write earlier (having not read your post yet Ischwart) "An exquisite and unique soloist who threaded gold through everything he played on". It seems we are very much on the same wavelength !

 

It's really striking to me, now that I've been pushed by the loss to think about it, just how many records I love are graced with Phil Miller's guitar playing. It's a distinctive sound and one that I've sort of taken for granted as part and parcel of the feel of so much Canterbury-related music.

Only heard about his passing now. Very sad. Have been listening to a lot of Matching Mole recently whilst reading the biography of Robert Wyatt. Now I think I will put on some National Health and have a beer.
