im afraid next episode will start with her walking up the stairs at the bus station and cc is waiting for her.....shes not safe till I see her get on the bus!

something about that whole storyline didnt seem quite right, like we missed a scene between her and francos character.
ps Maggie had another stellar episode, hand her the emmy now

Sadly, IMO due to the subject matter of the show, I'd be amazed to even see her nominated, let alone win. Hope I'm wrong, because I think she's doing the best work of her entire career on this show.

agreed! really good. Not sure about Franco at this point, not really a fleshed out character (either one of them) maybe he shouldnt be directing and acting dual roles in some of these

Maggie Gyllenhaal continues to have the best scenes. Turns out she is a pretty good "director";). I'd hire her! Finale next week-so much plot to reconcile.

yeah im kind of bummed, I could easily see this having a Wire type run. but with them skipping ahead to 1977 next season how many of the fringe characters will make it?

The show has been great so far, acting, scripts, dialog, period look, all just perfect. Too bad this season is only an 8 episode run.
Loved the episode with Paul hijacking Frank to go to a screening party in celebration of Wakefield Poole's "Boys In The Sand" , it was priceless, and it was a big deal for gay porn to be that popular back then. Joe Gage films were only a few years away at that point.
This is the second time the Velvets/Lou Reed have gotten a mention, somebody must be a fan.
Really nothing to complain about, this is one of the better things HBO has done in a while, and it erases the bad taste left by the horrific "Vinyl".
Oh, and that scene where Vince goes to a barber shop called Modell's to deal with the pimps? Yeah, that's Williamsburg, I used to buy scotch in that corner liquor store when I was a teenager and got my haircut in Modell's when I was a kid. They dirtied things up to make it look like it did back then, but man that was trip in the wayback machine.

I'm a bit bummed about the short 8 episode season too, but maybe HBO wanted to test how this show would go over. Hopefully they get a full 10 episodes for next season.

No wonder James Franco has the time to be everywhere.

Ain't that where the infamous performer; 'loose lips' used to work!? I still remember her slogan, but I won't repeat it here. I used to see articles and pics of her in action. I never realized what women were capable of, I was a kid! What she could do with a gallon of milk and a few ping pong balls....!!!;)

She probably appeared at the Melody Burlesk, along with Veri Knotti ....

It didn't feel like one....at all. Nothing resolved, no cliff-hanger, no deaths, nothing. This episode would fit squarely in the middle of a season, but as a finale, it didn't work at all. IMO;)

Well, there was at least one death.
I think that this season was some kind of prologue and as such, it worked well. But i must admit that 8 episodes feels a bit too short for a season. I can't wait for the next one.
The only thing that i'm not too fond of is James Franco playing the two brothers. It feels awkward when both characters are on screen.

So, I was already to jump in and throw down my 2 cents, but it's all been said here.

It felt like another episode -- albeit, a very good episode -- but it didn't function as a finale. It came across to me more as "end of part 1 of Season 1"

Yup. Good episode, but for a finale pretty short on either narrative tension or resolution. Still, I like the directions that the various story lines are taking, and I hope it doesn't take too long for them to produce the next season--which I also hope will be longer.

agree didn't feel like a finale really (aside from the song montage) I think they needed at least one or two more episodes to work this out. some of the storylines felt truncated or just fizzled
im having a problem caring about the franco character (s) , his acting not helping (light cigarette, deep inhale, exhale, smirk - then repeat). still love Maggie though

The "buy in" for The Deuce was tough, for me. I loved The Wire and Treme but Simon upped the grit quotient here a more than a little. Glad I hung in as I'm loving it now. Loved hearing the pimps talking about their lives now that their hos done moved indoors. I went and seen Fantasia. Yea man, that's good, I loved the dancing hippo scene. So many good characters.

Edit - Finished reading the thread and yea, it didn't feel like a season finale nor did I, when watching it, realize it was. Bummer, I want more dammit!

One thing that I think doesn't ring true is how good looking a couple of the women are who are doing the porn stuff. Lori is beautiful and that blonde who appeared in the last episode is really hot. From my recollection, the early women in porn ranged from average to homely and it wasn't until Marilyn Chambers came in that there was actually anyone pretty doing it.

That’s certainly subjective. I didn’t really find the new housewife actress attractive. And thanks to the intRwebs one can find plenty of vintage movies with good-looking women in them.

Well, it sure wasn’t said accurately. “No Deaths”? And “nothing resolved”? Hasn’t everybody been waiting to see Maggie’s character finally direct for almost two months now?

In the dictionary next to the word "meh" -->this episode. Surprising coming from "Sopranos" vet Michelle MacLaren.

I guess we should have seen that death coming from the title. I liked her- she was the most down to earth character on the show.

This episode could have worked as a series finale in that there were no cliffhangers, and we got a summary of the many of the relationships that had developed. Candy gets to direct, Abby and Frankie are together, Alston is pulled back from the precipice of a very dangerous career decision, and we saw the premiere of "Deep Throat". We got a very philosophical discussion about the place of pimps in the world.

This show desperately needs more room to breathe. Too many characters and intriguing storylines that deserve to be fleshed out (so to speak). See ya in a year!
