That's sort of how i feel about some of the footage included in Metallica's Kill 'em All box set. I appreciate them including all of it for historical purposes, but wish they had figured out something besides leaving the first few songs silent instead. It is what it is, i suppose. The footage does look nice though. \m/
Listening to Snakeskin Boots in the car today and really enjoyed it.....however it got me thinking....although they were great guitar players, both Vivian Campbell and Adrian Vandenberg were both very non-descript in terms of sound. Campbell especially...listening to the early Dio albums tonight, great playing but no real distinctive individual qualities and neither really added to the Whitesnake sound.
I made it though Snakeskin Boots yesterday... So the main 1987 album...yeah...not the best mastering job (not the worst either) and a missed opportunity to give us a definitive audiophile version (but that was probably never on the table either.) I loved Snakeskin Boots...sloppy, but this version of the band was. But damn did it sound like they were having fun. Great arrangement on Ain't No Love In The Heart of the City. I have a CD bootleg of this tour...not sure if it was the same show...I have to pull it out and I'll report when I get the chance.
I pulled out the bootleg...Bad Boys (live in Tokyo '88) Seems most of the Snakeskin Boots was sourced from the same show...not all the songs are present on the bootleg. Very different sonically as well.
Well, there are more songs on the official release...but it's wildly different EQ and compression, so very hard to compare.
Hmmm, that is not encouraging as the live show is the main appeal for me in this set. Was waiting to pick it up around Xmas but if it isn't much better than the boot maybe I will pass.
I think this is the boot I have Title: Live At Olympic Pool 1988 Label: Fire Power Catalog#: FP-030A/B Venue: Live At Olympic Pool Tokyo Japan 6/13/1988 Recording: Soundboard ( excellent sound quality ) Tracklist: Disc 1 1. another version of this show ...?! Maniac Paul's Bootlegs - Whitesnake - Slow And Easy - Tokyo, Japan - 1988
C'mon its only SHMF if you moan about the remaster... I enjoy it too....but then again I LOVE the mastering of Death Magnetic....whereas the world doesn't share my views.
Evolutions...I thought I was going to hate this as I'd rather hear the whole demo...but damn if I don't love what they did! Hearing the progression of each song is very interesting and damn if there isn't some incredible playing from Sykes. Also hearing how the lyrics developed is fascinating. David is a very talented man.
Finally going to sit down with this box today! Going to AB the EMI/UK 1987 against the SHM version soon. What do people think of the remix disc?
I haven't heard the Evolutions disc yet. What exactly did they do, piece sections from different demos of a song together to make one complete version of each track?
Yes. Usually starts out with just David and Sykes, then moves to a full band, then a more complete version. But the way they did it makes a compelling listen.
Yeah. Demos are normally something I listen to once out of curiosity then never consider again, but the way they've done these composite versions is really cool and something I've never come across before.
