And I'm wondering whether it's the most popular female name in lyrics.

What are the other candidates? "Donna"? "Linda"?

Off the top of my head, I think any word, including a name, with predominantly a vowel sound is easier to rhyme.

How about “Mary” as in Hello, Mary Lou by Rick Nelson (here with the Stone Canyon Band)

Susan was the third most popular female name in the 60s, and fewer things rhyme with Mary and Lisa.

The 'Sue' sound just has such a nice ring to it.

How about the Steppenwolf lyric: 'Sookie sookie sookie sookie sookie sookie Sue!'

I started a thread years ago on Something about Mary, which I believe is the most common name.

That is NOT a Steppenwolf lyric.

It is a Don Covay, Steve Cropper lyric.
Steppenwolf was covering the original by Don Covay.
Check out the original (and superior) song

I always thought Sally was the most popular:

    Sneaking through the alley
    Long tall
    Mustang
    Go round the roses
    Kick that little foot
