What do you think is the greatest (or your favorite) psychedelic or baroque pop album? Feel free to discuss the albums or to specify an album that is not listed.

For me, it will always be a three-way tie between Pet Sounds, Odessey and Oracle, and Forever Changes.
If I must pick one, then it has to be Odessey and Oracle.

Odessa? Do you think that's one?

Yes, Odessey and Oracle, from the list, looks good. But there are so many minor albums by little known artists that qualify; but the thing is, I can't remember the names of any of them! And I own them!

    Greatest? My favourites anyway:

    "Magical Mystery Tour"
    "Their Satanic Majesties Request"
    "Notorious Byrd Brothers"
    +
Other: one fab album missing from the list: "Small Faces" (Immediate 1967)

Picked Odessey but Pet Sounds and Forever Changes are just as good. The Left Banke should be on the list.

  13. None of those are in the Baroque genre. I agree regarding the Left Bank. They would be my first pick if you really include the word baroque

Yep, I've got all these and love them all. Had to vote for Forever Changes though. That one is just exceptional. The Red Telephone, just wow.

Nilsson - Pandemonium Shadow Show is a glaring omission from the above list of gems imo

Forever changes for me. As mentioned, The red telephone and also You set the scene are exceptional. The whole album however is very even without a weak track. Bryan Maclean's co tribution is top notch as well.

Lyrics, vocals, melodies, arrangements, production...a perfect album.

The Left Banke also belong here. Their first album is excellent although slightly uneven.

The Notorious Byrd Brothers is outstanding and the best album by this band. I do not consider it batoque pop, however.

  21. I think the added word Baroque makes that list wrong. That’s a great psychedelic pop list though.

I guess my understanding of baroque pop isn't as good as I thought it was. I knew that most of these weren't pure baroque pop albums, but I thought they were close enough. This wasn't supposed to be a complete list either, just a few of the all-time classics. I've never listened to The Left Banke, I'll have to check them out if so many people like them.

Listen to the Left Banke, you will certainly like them. Mike Brown is a great composer/arranger and the Spanish guy is an excellent vocalist.

What exactly is psychedelic about Pet Sounds ?

I love the album but hear none of the usual things associated with psychedelic music on Pet Sounds
