Here's Uncut's list of the best archive releases of 2017 (see issue 248).

They left off 'Urban Hymns'-The Verve Deluxe Set?

How about the Steven Wilson BluRay/CD reissue of 'Black Sea'-XTC?

Also, even though I got off the Jethro Tull train for 'Songs from the Wood', since I do not like Folk-Rock, that Steven Wilson Deluxe Book Box Set got great reviews by most fans of that album. I might get it eventually though for the concert that played several of their older songs.

 

Bowie, Prince, Neil Young, Grateful Dead. These also happen to be my top four favourite artists of all time.

Didn’t realise Before and After Science got a re-issue. Will have to check that out.

 

Yes. And Dylan's BS13*. And the Fairport box. And David Bowie's Cracked Actor: Live in Los Angeles '74.

IMO the following titles also deserve a place on this list:
- George Michael - Listen Without Prejudice
- Marillion - Misplaced Childhood
- Bob Dylan - Trouble No More (BS 13)
- Paul McCartney - Flowers in the Dirt

 

The most enjoyable so far has been Bob Dylan's Trouble No More Bootleg Series Vol. 13

 

I only have the ‘Mats at Maxwell’s so I voted for it. It’s a fun listen and takes me back to the time I saw them just a few years later on that tour with Tom Petty.

 

Gotta be Hitchhiker.

I already had "Bright Phoebus" and a million copies of 5.8.77 so can't vote for those... but Hitchhiker came out of left field.

Did you have an original on vinyl? It was very hard to find.

 

No. I had a CD release.

I agree it is nice to have on vinyl... but I guess I'm just saying that it wasn't 'new' to me... and that's why I gave the tip of the had to Hitchhiker.

 

No Trouble No More by Bob Dylan?

Invalid list.

For me it would be a tie between Trouble No More and Cornell 5/8/77

Although Ringo's drums on Good Morning, Good Morning have never sounded so good.

The Beach Boys Sunshine Tomorrow 1967 is another good choice...would have preferred a single cd of the new stereo Wild Honey though.

 

The Pretty Things with Philippe DeBarge - Rock St. Trop, of course.

 

Sgt Pepper showed how to produce a really nice package and I for one thought that the remix did the album justice and gave a much more balanced sound picture and a much improved clarity to many elements opening up the backing vocals and adding impact to the bass and drums. They woulld have done this them if there were not record company resistence.

AThe Beach Boys have also produced a nice period piece for the same year without pushing the cost. They did a beautiful job on that front with Smile a few years back though!

Ramones Leave Home from the next 5. A nice continuation of the 40th anniversary reissues which bring back a lot fun memories from the early days of punk. A shame that no-one remains from this album. RIP Ramones.

 

Has to be Lal & Mike Waterson Bright Phoebus - especially the 2 CD version

oh man - The Scarecrow gives me tingles.......Child Amongst The Weeds......great album.

 

It's reviewed in the same issue. The time span is presumably Nov 2016–Nov 2017.

Re: Cornell 5/8/77, is this essential? Might go for it.

 

I own about a dozen Dick’s Picks and in my opinion Barton beats them;
Seems to be the rare melding of a great performance AND great recording which is what marks truly great live albums in general.

 

I love the Huskers set, but for me this is a no brainer (shame on Uncut for ignoring this):

 

I love the two Richard Thompson acoustic CDs. They are new recordings of old songs. Not sure where these fit.

 

I voted for Husker Du, the Dead, and Jon Hassell, but the new King Crimson box should be on the list.
