Yes agreed there are good people. I think Beck is really strong as well as the others you mentioned. My point is that even though the cast is talented there really aren’t any “stars” ( other than Kate) like the recent past.

I would agree- they are kind of strong utility players in the tradition of Sudekis, Killam, even Dan Aykroyd

Based on her first few episodes, I'm positive Heidi Gardner is gonna be a big name within a couple of seasons.

It was certainly the exact same joke but I laughed at it more than anything they have done in a long time. When he spit a mouthful of blood on Leslie, I lost it.

I could tell by the way Kenan was reacting that things weren't going to plan. :p

I love her already. And I especially like that she seems good at staying in character and not breaking.

Comedy is certainly very subjective. I was thinking Heidi wouldn't make it to a second season. That sketch where she was lost cousin of franko didn't make me laugh. Her best sketch for me has been the porn pizza deliverer and that was just ok. She may have been the best part of the Floribama shore sketch but that was pretty brief.

I liked her in the sketch where she was a the troubled teen into straws that was abusive towards her month (Aidy). But my favorite bit of hers so far was the WU some episodes back where she was a conglomerate of the girlfriend/wife character in every boxing movie ever made.

Did anyone like that sketch at the end of the news where Michael Che was dressed as a woman? Overall I don't think the pre recorded elements have been home runs this season but putting one in the news seemed odd.

I did. They could've ran it as a standalone but either way it was really creative. I know people talk about "this year isn't as good as last season or 5 seasons ago, etc." but you have to hand it to this era. They think out of the box. Remember in the Bill Hader/Kristian Wiig days when there was literally a game or talk show sketch every episode? There is a lot more diversity in terms of the sketches that past few season so you gotta give them props for that.

They still overuse the game show bit- it's usually the skit after the first commercial break- I also like that they don't beat into the ground unfunny recurring characters (ugh Gilly)

Agreed, trying new stuff is the only way to make new stuff. I felt like the joke was to put a black man in a blond wig and not much else. I thought it odd they put it in the news. They only other time I can think of a produced segment in the news is when it involved one of the regular characters on the news. Like Stephan and Seth Meyers getting married.

Perhaps that is a new thing but it starts to step away from the premise of a news cast. Overall, I think the news is better now than it has been in years.

As a recent cord cutter, I've watched the last two episodes entirely on youtube. Just curious, does SNL upload the whole show each week, or are there some bits they don't upload? For the James Franco episode, I found:

    Santa Cold Open
    James Franco's monologue
    Sexual Harrasment Charlie
    Gift Wrap
    Za (courtoom sketch)
Reunion (Franco and Heidi Gardner on the porch)
    Christmas Charity
    Spelling Bee
WU segment 1 - with appearance by "Cathy Anne" (Cecily)
WU segment 2 - with the pre-taped "liberal white woman" bit

Other than the two musical numbers, am I missing anything?

They definitely still overuse the game show bits. What bugs me most is that they don't even seem to use the game as much of a premise or write jokes into it. The whole sketch is just a series of celebrity impressions and 90% of the run time is introducing all of them so they all do their impression, and that's that. I never got tired of the "Secret Word" game show with Bill Hader and Kristen, as at least they were playing characters (not just famous people impressions) and they used the game itself for comedy. "Meet Your Future Wife" was also a great game-show sketch because of the premise, not just an excuse to have a series of impressions.

I agree on the Celebrity Jeopardy/Family Feud point as it's mainly a forum to do celebrity impressions. But overall there are less of these and talk shows in recent years. I never got tired of the Secret Word even though it was the same joke every time. Kristen just made it super funny.

They were online too. I just didn't watch them, other than a few seconds to see what it was like. I did find out the musical guest was pronouced "scizza" though. I thought SZA was just pronounced S-Z-A.

Nice throwback to season 1 with the ice rink closing. Of course we still couldn't hear the last few seconds of the song. Guess that's the most we'll ever get.

I don't remember them doing it in any other Christmas show, at least not as an extended ending.

Yeah, the timing was off, they finished early. Should've had the Foos jam for a few more minutes. They turned of Dave's mic too early.
