I have seen it two times already (SW fan since 1990, Prequel-hater) and found it to be one of the best installments in the saga.
It is actually a *surprising* movie. I like all the risks they took (especially compared to the overly safe TFA), how they have expanded the mythology; but of course it doesn't go well with some, more conservative, fans.
I only disliked a few attempts at humour that were poorly placed, but they last less than 1 second so I could easily disregard them.

    I would rank it thus:

    1. SW: ANH / 1bis. ESB
    3. ROJ
    4. TLJ
    5. R1
    6. TFA

    7. ROS
    8. TPM

I suppose that means another Bourne movie will be on the table shortly, starring Damon.

Like I said, that Gleiberman review seems to be an outlier - most reviews are fairly positive...

BTW, check out the reviews on Will Smith's new cop/fantasy film Bright (being released on Netflix):

"The worst movie of 2017," IndieWire declares, writing: "There's boring, there's bad, and then there's Bright." "A mess," says Vulture. Over at Vanity Fair, words like "tedious," "generic" and "cringeworthy" were thrown around. The L.A. Times sums it up thusly: "This film is a chore."

King Arthur looks like the most painful of the flops.

Even compared to whoever financed “The Promise”?

I suspect King Arthur will lose more actual dollars, just due to its enormous budget and the likely equally enormous promotion/release budget. My guess is they're over $200 million in the hole with that dud, as opposed to under $200 million with The Promise. Why the heck was The Promise so expensive, anyhow? Oh, I see it was a Kirk Kerkorian vanity project. That explains it.

Also, the audience scores for The Promise are really good, so it could have legs in home video and streaming. King Arthur didn't score nearly as well.

Had lunch with a friend that I don't see often. Been a couple of years since last visit. He's been a grip in Hollywood for at least 30 years now. Ask about any movie rumors going around. He said the only one that's been coming up more then others is a remake of The Wizard of Oz.:shake:

That is just sad. I want no part. Imagine the CGI, the fart jokes, the "attitude". Please don't let this happen.

Weird that they didn't include "Split" on that list:

    SPLIT
    Global box office: $278,304,578
    Production cost: $9 million

That means "Split" earned almost exactly 31 times its cost. The only film that did better in that regard was "Get Out", which did about 57 times its cost!

Split technically was released at a film festival in September 2016, so it didn't qualify as a 2017 film. I agree, anytime a movie makes 10 times the budget (or more), the executives break out the champagne and go crazy.

A fantastic movie made on a shoestring budget, it all starts with the story. Very effective and horrifying proving you don't need tons of effects/gore to get inside peoples heads and freak them out. Don't Breathe was another low budget horror that over performed $157 million on $9.9 million budget.

That was huge as well. Anytime you can get a cost-to-gross ratio that high, clearly the filmmakers zeroed-in on exactly what the audience wanted to see.

Not sure if that's your argument or Variety's, but it makes no sense in this context.

The article is about the most profitable movies in 2017. "Split" was in theaters in 2017, so it's entirely illogical to NOT view it as one of the year's big hits...

There are a lot of films released in one year but make most of their money in the following year. But (as one example) Close Encounters of the Third Kind was released in late November 1977, so it's a 1977 film, even though most of its box office was made in 1978.

But that's not the case for "Split". It didn't have any theatrical release at all in 2016 - just 2 festival appearances.

It wasn't even a case where they released it theatrically in 2 theaters in LA/NYC so it'd qualify for awards before it went broad the next year.

It made every penny it made in 2017. It didn't play in a single "regular theater" until 2017. It's a 2017 film...

"Variety" isn't the one in this thread arguing that "Split" is a 2016 movie, though...

In terms of box office The Last Jedi is starting to falter, the week over week daily drop for Fri-Sat-Sun are 76%-51%-71%, very significant. 10 Day domestic totals vs The Force Awakens, Last Jedi is down 32% ($540 million to $365). Not sure if that speaks to the quality of the movie or possible franchise fatigue from movie goers.

  25. I find that I rarely agree with Gleiberman. I sometimes wonder if him be an outlier for many reviews, is just the fact that he wants to be contrary to other critics.
