    Ok... I’ll play.

Appetite For Destruction - Guns N’ Roses

    1. “Sweet Child O’ Mine”
    2. “Rocket Queen”
    3. “Anything Goes”
    4. “Think About You”
    5. “Welcome To The Jungle”
    6. “My Michelle”

    7. “Paradise City”
    8. “Mr. Brownstone”
    9. “It’s So Easy”
    10. “Nightrain”
    11. “You’re Crazy”
    12. “Out Ta Get Me”

It’s testimony to the quality of these songs that this would still be a great album - but it wouldn’t have been a hit album, or regarded by many as a classic. A cult favorite maybe.

Sequencing isn’t everything, but it has a lot of impact - a lesson sometimes forgotten by GN’R on the follow-up Use Your Illusion.

I really think that you would have loved the album just as much as you do now. The revised running order would be the original 'proper' running order and you would hate to see it changed.

It would have gone down just the same IMO. How many albums do people play and seriously think "this running order sucks"? I think people just take things how they find them. Whatever order we come up with in this thread would be how it is and people would still love those albums.

I really do strongly believe pacing is important. Your argument is like if we took Star Wars, arranged the scenes in a different order, and said "it's the same content, you just need to get used to it!"

    I think not.:D
Stories are different and yes ballads/rockers/filler can be arranged in a certain order to sound a little better but I don't think it ultimately makes a huge difference. I respect your opinion though, maybe I'm wrong! I just think that the first time we hear an album that's the order we like it. A good collection of songs is a good collection of songs.

I love the White album and I still think that I'd love it in reverse order if that's the way I'd always heard it.

There are albums where it may not matter so much. But a lot of times it does matter. When I used to make mix CDs of various artists, the order was always intentional. Where you are in the album, and how one song flows into the next.

For the Spirit album I did here, my ordering is awful. Makes a huge difference!

It's kind of hard to really wreck a truly great top to bottom album, thus it comes down to using the relatively weaker tracks as lead-ins to sabotage the great tracks.

Respectfully disagree. The one-two-three-four-five-six punch that was the original “G” side of Appetite made little teenaged twerps like me take notice back in 1988. If AFD had started with the weaker songs from the “R” side, or (god-forbid!) a ballad, it would’ve been harder for GN’R to hold the “street cred” that was pretty crucial to their appeal. Their management was aware of this, too - that’s why other ballads like “Don’t Cry” and “November Rain,” both already written, were excluded from Appetite - even if that meant using a weaker song or two on the second side.

Sequencing, ebb & flow, structuring transitions to show each tune in the best possible light - all these things enhance the individual songs on classic albums. The whole becomes slightly greater than the sum of the parts. The London Calling example fits this idea, with the (IMO) weaker tracks emphasized, and the stronger ones buried. The weaker tracks overwhelm & give a very different overall listening experience, an overall weaker album.

Lack of proper flow is one reason I’ve never truly fallen in love with Spotify, and can only do shuffle if I’m in the right mood/frame of mind. Too jarring.

To each their own, though, certainly.

Also, all of the songs are credited to Richard-Jagger, except Sister Morphine, which is Pallenberg-Richard-Jagger.

The cover is the back of a fat man with plumber's butt. It is scratch and sniff.
