Very sad to hear through Randy West that Rose Marie, "Sally" of THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW, just passed away today. I'm glad that at least she lived long enough to see her autobiographical documentary, WAIT FOR YOUR LAUGH, come out to great acclaim over the last few months. By all accounts, Ms. Marie had the longest career of anybody in show business, since she had been working since the age of 4!

I agree, an incredible life indeed. She was active at the celebrity/autograph shows in the LA area over the past 10-15 years, and I often saw her there at her booth, chatting with fans. She was a remarkable woman, active to the very end.

Here's a clip showing how versatile she was as a musical/comedy performer, from The Dick Van Dyke Show...

Very sad news but like Vidiot said she was able to live and see the appreciation. Plus, she just was in prime time once again last week on the DVD special. A wonderful woman, a great talent, she will be missed but you know Heaven in ringing with laughter tonight.

TV Land Awards 2003, she ambled up to the stage with the cast of the Dick Van Dyke Show to accept a Legend award at the end of the ceremony, stepped up to the mic and said, "I was a young lady when the evening started!" Brought the house down at 79.

Rest in peace. As a not-too-big TV watcher I remember her mostly as the mainstay on the top row of Hollywood Squares.

That 1929 clip was a sound-on-disc Vitaphone "talkie"- Rose Marie was two months shy of her sixth birthday when she performed this. Even "hung" with the mob back when she was a club performer.

Noted Hollywood writer and blogger Mark Evanier weighs in with a very affectionate tribute to Ms. Marie:

He points out that he started to write this obituary several times over the years, but never quite got it to where he liked it. It looks like this will be it.

Mark also says that Rose Marie -- despite being in poor health -- was absolutely ecstatic to see her documentary premiere in August, and at least the world will now know her story. She was an amazing woman and very talented. Mark points out that her role as Sally Rogers was the first single woman character on television who worked a full-time job, wasn't married, didn't depend on a man, and made the same income as a man. In her way, she was kind of a breakthrough character.
