There are typically hundreds and hundreds of independent movies that come out every year, not all of which get wide releases in the United States. So there are some small, interesting non-studio films that come out each year -- still.

There are a ton of films coming out from studios both large and small that don't get a lot of advertising. Admittedly, it's easier to see smaller films in Chicago, but every time I hear people make the ridiculous claim that "there is nothing out there but comic book movies, sequels and remakes" I check to see what's in the four theaters I can get to via the bus from my apartment in Kansas City, MO, and I always find a wide variety of movies.

Here's what's availible for me to see tomorrow at four theaters:

    1. All The Money In The World
    2. Coco
    3. Darkest Hour
    4. Downsizing
    5. Faces Places
    6. Father Figures
    7. Ferdinad
    8. Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle
    9. Justice League
    10. Lady Bird
    11. Loving Vincent
    12. Pitch Perfect 3
    13. Star Wars: The Last Jedi
    14. The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
    15. The Greatest Showman
    16. The Shape of Water
    17. The Star
    18. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
    19. Wonder
OK, that's 19 films in four theaters. Four are animated, although Loving Vincent is an art house film, entirely painted and not a "kids movie". Four are sequels. Everything else is original.

She doesn't watch television. Every night, after work, she sees a movie. On weekends, she sees more than one film every day. How many hours every day does the average American spend watching TV? (and yes, NetFlix, Amazon, Hulu, HBO-Now and every other streaming service counts as "TV") With MoviePass, she paid $89.95 for the privilege, which is a lot less than a subscription to any one of the streaming services.

I hardly spend any time watching TV, FWIW. I feel like I've watched all I needed for one lifetime.

Not me, not at all. In fact, I hate this time of year as nothing's on. Still, it's a good time to revisit some of my fave series in the archive...

I have the opposite point of view: when most of TV is in reruns, it's time to get back to the movie theater and watch some big pictures. (And I also catch up on all the crap that's stacked up on my DVR.)

I think you're seriously underestimating the black audience's interest in this movie. It's going to be a blockbuster.

Not true. The opposite is generally the case with DC vs Marvel. Marvel is usually the one that looks dull and boring in the comics. There has been a bit of a role reversal and out of character moves made by DC and Warner in the comics and films lately and that’s why DC’s films have been hurting lately and Marvel’s have been doing so well. It really is a shame that B and C list Marvel characters (and that’s being generous to some of them) are getting better films than DC’s A and B-list characters.

Quoting myself, we both know neither of us are anyone's fantasy material, so I don't mind her panting at Chris Hemsworth, she doesn't mind me doing the same at Karen Gilliam.

    My bold predictions:

    Megahits:
    Avengers: Infinity Wars
    Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
    The Incredibles 2

    Hits:
    Black Panther
    Deadpool 2
    Mission Impossible 6
    Ralph Breaks the Internet
    X-Men: Dark Phoenix

    Surprise hits:
    Proud Mary
    Maze Runner: The Death Cure

    Flops:
    A Wrinkle in Time
    New Mutants
    Tomb Raider
    Halloween
    The Predator
    A Star is Born

    Wildcards:
Ready Player One...I'm thinking "profitable but disappointing".
Aquaman...after the success of Ant-Man, I give up on why people like this junk, but I'll predict disappointment.
Rampage...Dwayne Johnson has global cred, so I'll predict "hit" status for this silliness.

I personally have no idea how it will do or how it will be received, considering all the drama surrounding it

I think New Mutants could be the years surprise hit, a bit like It was, it can capture the comic book and horror demographics so if it's decent and the buzz starts it has a guaranteed fan base. It's (apart from Blade I guess) the first real modern horror comic book film. The subject matter they are drawing from is also excellent.

    Whoops!

Obviously it'll be a hit, but I'm gonna say some Star Wars fatigue will set in, and this one will miss the one billion mark.
