How do you rank the Star Wars films? [SPOILERS!]

How do you rank the Star Wars films, including Rogue One?

I would guess most people will place the original trilogy films ahead of the prequel films; rank the original trilogy with IV (New Hope) or V (Empire) as the best and VI (Return of the Jedi) as the least; and rank the prequels as III-II-I, best to worst. I think opinions will vary for the newer films, VII (Force Awakens), Rogue One, and VIII (Last Jedi).

I added the spoiler warning in the thread title, as people may talk about Last Jedi here!

Here's my list. VIII and VI are a tie for me, and Rogue One and II are also a tie for me.

Best to Worst:
Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back
Episode IV – A New Hope
Episode VIII – The Last Jedi
Episode VI – Return of the Jedi
Episode III – Revenge of the Sith
Episode VII – The Force Awakens
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Episode II – Attack of the Clones
Episode I – The Phantom Menace

This is not easy ! I rate all of them as equals, though there are a few slips with some films, but one really stands out as a truly stand-alone success....Episodes I-III offer a complete historical perspective of the series, & are much better in appeal after a few viewings IMO. Growing-up with Episode IV-VI makes them special for sure, & in contrast to the others, it was certainly the acting & actors that made these films great, as opposed to modern technologies & special effects visually engaging you. (If episodes IV-VI are compared to say J.R.R.Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings", then episodes I-III are like the "Silmarillion", (a historical narrative with tales, compared to a singular tale)).

I'm voting for "Rogue One" here as my favorite film. It really surprised the heck-out-of-me as to how well the story was crafted to perfectly fit-in with the series. And the characterizations were more human, & believable IMO. - ( Great acting & casting here too I thought ). It also has no real happy ending, as our hero's die for the belief in a greater cause. Awesome.

Here's to episode 3.5 LOL !

Fan since 1977. Just saw The Last Jedi for the 3rd time today in Cinemark XD 3D. The Last Jedi is now my favorite Star Wars movie. Spectacular. Emotional. Thought-provoking. Very good characters and character arcs. And I really enjoyed the story. I realize this is a controversial view perhaps shared by no one else here.

The Battle for Endor wasn't too bad considering what it was and the small budget. I like it better than the sequels if I am being truly honest.

The Holiday Special...I don't know (or want to know) what the creator(s) were on when they made that. Did Lucas have much to do with the Holiday Special?

Top 3 is easy. No problem there. In that order too

6 The Force Awakens
These are tough to separate. They're all mid-tier for me, and the order of these 3 could change day-to-day.

The Phantom Menace just pips Attack of the Clones because it doesn't have cringy Jedi-love plus PM has Darth Maul.
Yeah, yeah.. Revenge of the Sith has cringy Jedi-love, but the Anakin/Obi-Wan fight at the end redeems it.

 

5,4,6,8,7,3, Rogue One, 1,2

 

It's not 'A New Hope'

It's just 'Star Wars' okay! That's what it said on the huge banner on the cinema when I saw it as a kid in 77.

 

Swap Attack for 9th place and I'm with you.
