Of course such a list would be great, Richard! ...btw would the remaster of Love is The Same Anywhere you mention be the same as the one released on 9th March 2015 on the Hallmark Label which I actually bought?! Judging by the download on qobuz which I listened to, both appear to be in Mono!
The Hallmark - as are a lot of the PD re-issues of Matt's Material - is just taken from whatever they can find! Usually (in Hallmarks case) fairly battered vinyl! Although i've never bothered to find out what it's really like. The 1997 digipack re-issue (I don't know if it's available anywhere as a download i'm afraid) is from the Stereo Master and sounds great. Remastered by Peter Mew (Yes he did do good work - I did several projects with his involvement and was never disappointed. He did what re-issue producers wanted) The Stereo masters as far as I can ascertain are cut directly from the session reels (apart from April Fool which is a "stereoized" copy of the mono - see earlier post). As far as i'm aware no other re-issue comes close - and nobody seems to have copied it despite it being PD in Europe! There are some second hand copies on Amazon.co.uk at the moment.
Notes were never written for Rare Monro - This was the first set I did any work for, and then only 11 tracks, so the research wasn't done in regards to recording dates. However for Rarities it was. OK, I'm going to give this album-by-album thread a go chronologically shortly. I hope I'm not treading on Richard's toes as he is in the process of providing a list of albums and singles. I'll be sauntering through Matt's albums and singles in a separate thread so as not to clog this discussion up, and hopefully someone will join in and offer their thoughts on Matt and his music.
How I wish I could like posts more than once. Richard's posts are deserving of a 'super-like' option. Best Wishes, David
I’ve just been listening to some samples of the "two-fers" on iTunes and was surprised to find a mix of mono and stereo songs. I know these albums were originally released in mono and Stereo, so it seems strange that a Parlophone re-issue contains a mixture of both on one album. I have not heard the original releases so can anyone confirm that the Stereo album was stereo all the way through. Thanks.
Some, but I do own every single released track. (and all the unreleased ones!). The Monro estate hold all of Matt's discography in vinyl & CD format so I have references to go to if required.
Be my guest. I was only posting those things here because I thought it was what you wanted me to do. I'll leave you to it. Just ask if you need anything.
The Two-fers as I explained were a mess. They did however use complete masters so if they used a Mono LP master it was Mono all the way through and likewise a Stereo Master. Stereo all the way through. Most of the Capitol albums 1966 - 67 were issued this way were 2nd (or possibly 3rd) generation Mono tapes (all that was retained by the UK archive) All the first gen Stereo Masters are in the Capitol USA vaults and are what I've used in my remasters - transferred for me at Capitol Tower as 24/96 files.
You are most kind. Do carry on posting your listings here. My thread will be a slow crawl through Matt's music, to give anyone that wants to a chance to chip in with comments. I wouldn't want that to hold you up here.
Thanks - looks like I was sold a pup there! The tracks sound good to me even if they are mono but they are probably a vinyl rip as you say. I suppose I have the mono version at least! I believe I have found the 'correct' version on Qobuz. It is on the Parlophone label and it again sounds good but in Stereo this time. I didn't realise the version on The George Martin Years of 'No one will ever know' was the '1st Version' from the 11th May 1961 till I did a comparison! Must use my glasses!
Interesting. Richard, can you elaborate further as I do not understand why the Capitol albums in '66/67 would use 2nd let alone 3rd generation tapes for the mono records. Why didn’t they use the 1st generation for optimum sound when releasing a new album unless a 2nd generation was the result of a mono mix or tweak. Thanks. Mike
It's quite simple. The first Generation masters are in the USA and the tapes sent to the UK were copies of those, If (as I believe) the Mono mixes are fold downs of the stereo that adds yet another generation to the tapes (1 - master, 2 - fold down, 3 - UK dub). When creating the two-fers EMI just took down what they had on the shelf in the UK library. I suspect that the UK was never sent tapes for the Stereo versions, instead it was either imports from the USA in new sleeves or perhaps stampers - I've never investigated it. The UK Stereo Market was still quite small in 66/67 Matt recorded 4 & 3/4 albums in the USA. "This is the Life". "Here's to My Lady" (Both Issued in Mono from uk mono tapes) "These Years" (issued in Stereo from a Umatic dub of the US Stereo Master sent over for the compilation "Matt Monro - The Capitol Years") and "Invitation to Broadway" (Recorded 66 but issued 68 - Issued as the bulk of the CD "Hollywood and Broadway" all in Mono). Finally there is about half of "Invitation to the Movies" which was 3/4 newly recorded material made in the US plus "Strangers in the Night" from the LP "This is The Life" and "Born Free" & "Wednesday's Child" both recorded in the UK. This album has only seen re-release on a "Collectables" CD in the US. "Matt Monro - The Capitol Years" was an all stereo release and featured quite a lot of the tracks from these albums, This was compiled in the UK - hence the Umatic of "These Years", How the other tracks were sent I don't know, but no other Umatics are in the EMI archive. For cost cutting reasons I used the Umatic dub of the few "These Years" tracks on Complete Singles Collection. I recall that despite the fact this was a digital copy of the 1st gen master they STILL used noised reduction! The rest of Matt's Capitol albums "Late Late Show" & "Were Gonna Change The World" (Or it's similar "Close to You" in the US) were recorded in the UK apart from two tracks "Close To You" and "Why Can't I Touch You" (probably the worst song Matt ever recorded) recorded at Matt's last session for Capitol in the US. The two Spanish albums albums were mainly recorded in the UK, with a some tracks on "En Espana" recorded in Spain. All the Masters for those albums (except the two US recorded tracks) are held in the UK.
Wow - that explains a lot. I had no idea he recorded some of his albums in the USA and that they effectively supplied tapes to the UK. Was the Capitol Years a Box Set of albums or a single comp album. Thanks for that interesting information Richard.
