Picked up a NM version of Aja and went to enter into my Discogs collection. I read through every page here and might of missed it?

    MCAD-37214
DIDX 55 (Only place printed is on last page of insert upper right of pic of Fagen shirtless and in sunglasses.
Matrix Reads: MCAD-37214-1 1C xxx (3 small marks or numbers like 112) and MFD BY JVC.
Back cover shows barcode 07674-17214-29 BUT vertically on upper right corner.
Nothing on hub, nor any black lining-- just lettering for standard release.

Combine all that and haven't come across any kind of match.

EAC peak values (or equivalent) would help us identify it further.

Here is what I found at my local thrift store for a buck.

    Aja
MCAD-37214 on the disc tray insert (spine and back), also the tray insert has the 90s slant MCA logo (spine and back)
The disc and the artwork fold out insert has the old MCA logo, catalog number is identical to the one on the tray insert.

The disc inner says MFG by Universal.
    MCAD37214 0367308071.

Any idea when this was release was done, and what mastering I have?
I also find it strange that the MCA logos don't match on this CD release.

So - again - EAC peak values would really help us identify it.

Ask here if you need help determining them.

Concerning Mastering 7, if I look at the DR database, the MCLD 19145 and the DMCL 1745 seem to be completely different masters"
Basically both versions are hard to find because they are not easily identified uniquely. The MCLD is also pressed by other plants than Nimbus, and it shares its EAN with a US Aja release. The DMCL shares its EAN with the 1999 EU remaster. Many sellers on eBay and Amazon can confirm the EAN, but I didn't find one that was willing to look at the disc itself. I've ordered 2 already that turned out to be the wrong ones, and I'm currently waiting for the third. Luckily used CDs are dirt cheap in the UK, so I can try a couple of times...

I can confirm that the MCA UK MCLD 19145 "Pressed by NIMBUS in England" CD with mastering 7 and matrix "A1388 DMCL 1745 : 1:0 IFPI L123" has DR 14:

It's probably too late to answer your question, anyway for all who are interested: I just purchased a Nimbus MCLD 19145 made in UK, it is moderately scarce but the good thing is that, unlike other pressings, it's identifiable via the unique barcode: 0 08811 91452 3.
    The matrix of the disc I got is "DMCL 1745 : 1 : 4".
EAC peak levels are: 90.7/91.7/90.8/88.9/96.3/86.1/97.5 (so it's actually mastering #7)
    DR values:
    Code:
    DR Peak RMS Duration Track
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    DR15 -0.84 dB -18.38 dB 5:11 01-Black Cow
    DR14 -0.75 dB -18.54 dB 7:58 02-Aja
    DR14 -0.83 dB -16.83 dB 7:36 03-Deacon Blues
    DR12 -1.02 dB -15.79 dB 3:57 04-Peg
    DR13 -0.32 dB -15.64 dB 5:35 05-Home at Last
    DR15 -1.29 dB -18.44 dB 5:06 06-I Got The News
    DR14 -0.21 dB -16.79 dB 4:31 07-Josie

I have the same with a 1:2 at the end of the matrix instead of 1:4. It has no IFPI so definitely pre-1993. I’ve also got the very early J for US 21A1. They both sound really good yet slightly different, I’ve not been able to form an opinion as to which I prefer!

Sorry, I forgot to report I found one too. I do have the “DMCL 1745 : 1 : 0” and it sounds very nice. Mine also has an ifpi code.

Please note that Discogs says the same barcode was also used by a Universal UK pressing. And I don’t know if Universal used the same mastering.

According to Wikipedia, in 1996 "MCA Music Entertainment Group, was renamed Universal Music Group". So my undestanding is that the Universal UK pressing is a late MCA UK pressing. I guess the mastering is the same but would not swear to it. I think the discogs listing Steely Dan - Aja should be split and the Universal pressing belongs here: Steely Dan - Aja

I think there's to little info in the second entry to be sure about making this split. When I saw them, my first thought was to combine them. Still, if the Nimbus version and the Universal version have different masterings, that would definitely be a reason to split them up. But we here are probably the only people really caring. :shh:

As i said before the Nimbus is usually the original master, but slightly level adjusted. As such the peak levels looks a bit different to the original. But its essentially the same master.

I have used this thread for a long time to help me acquire Masterings 3 and 6 (thank you!). I have one of #6 and three variations of #3, and I am convinced that the CSR I have, a #3, with matrix DIDX-55 21 and “CSR Compact Disc” around the hub is not the same as the other two #3’s even with the same peak levels. I have the following:

    #3

    1. MCA Japan for US CSR DIDX-55 21

    2. MCA Japan for US JVC MCAD – 37214 - T5 E2 1

    3. MCA US DADC DIDX-000055 4

    #6 - MCA Germany MCD 01745 DMCL 1745 SONOPRESS I-5627/MCD01745 A1

I’ve listened to them over and over at different times as I have acquired the different copies. Comparing “Peg”, the CSR sounds very different from the other #3’s in two ways I’ve noticed most: the bass and the lead vocal position. On the CSR the bass sounds very natural but just a tad less deep than #6, and the lead vocal is more upfront just like #6. On the other two #3’s the lead vocal is further back and the bass seems tighter as if compressed. They sound the same. I compared these to “Peg” on my copy of “A Decade of Steely Dan”, and it sounds very similar to 2 and 3 of #3 in terms of the bass and lead vocal position.

I love the CSR because of the natural sounding bass, which is even more noticeable on “Josie”. #6 seems to be a slightly tweaked version of the CSR but more natural than the other two #3’s. The bass doesn’t sound compressed like it does on the other two #3’s.

Whatever mastering is what, I’m grateful to the forum for keeping me looking rather than unknowingly settling for a version I like less. I just wanted to post my results.

    David Lowe,

can you check if your "MCA Japan for US CSR DIDX-55 21" has the same peak values, but different mastering than your "MCA Japan for US JVC MCAD – 37214 - T5 E2 1"? I would also be interested in samples, say first minute of track 1 of both CDs.

They do have the same peak values using EAC. What is the best tool for extracting the samples and where should I post them?
