What's the best Paul McCartney album?

 

Band on the Run. So many good memories and brilliant songs on that disc

 

It's a difficult one.

The obvious answer is 'Band on the run', but I voted for 'Choba B CCCP', as it's the one I'd pick out and play these days. 'Venus and Mars' through to 'Press to play' were all really patchy albums. 'Flowers in the dirt' was another highlight and everything after that has been really patchy too, though I do like 'Run Devil Run', as again he sounds like he is enjoying himself some of the time.

 

Even Flowers, good as it is, isn’t perfect. Actually, it nearly is for the first ten songs. End the original album with “That Day Is Done” and you have an album almost as good as Band on the Run. Almost.

Choba B CCCP is excellent, but since it’s all covers I can’t call that one Paul’s best (I went with BotR). I wish he’d done more straight-ahead rock & roll like that when doing all original songs. He sounds more committed, and as you say enjoing himself, on that album than most of his others.

His more recent albums are pretty great too. Chaos, Memory, and New are all wonderful (Couldn’t care less about “Kisses”). So is Electric Arguments, which should probably be on this list too.

 

There wasn't enough room for The Fireman/classical

That one and McCartney are probably my two favorites.
When I was a teen in the early 90s I played the cassettes over and over, and now I'm a recently turned middle aged man and I still turn to those two.

 

Didn't even bother going down the list. RAM!

 

Wow really a lot of turds on that list. That being said band on the run is his peak

 

Surprised that Ram is beating out Band on the Run

 

Band On The Run.I like Lennon-P.O.B. as the greatest solo Fabs but B.O.T.R. is the most consistently entertaining. 40+ yrs later and its as much fun as ever to listen to this pop
masterpiece. It has everything great about PM musical talent.

The 60s&70s are definitely over.That's the reason.

 

London Town for me. A archive edition for this and Back To The Egg would be very welcome for the new year.

 

Ram and Venus and Mars to me(even though the other members of Wings are really present in the album).

 

Ram is a masterpiece and the most Macca of them all, however my favorite is II

 

Chaos and Creation in the Backyard. That's the one I listen to most often and it always amazes me. Incredible arrangements, assured composition, and wonderful musical weirdnesses. Love it. RH

 

Love McCartney & Wild Life but really love the Ram.

 

BAND ON THE RUN is the best. No weak songs and at least half the songs are classics.
RAM, FLAMING PIE, and TUG OF WAR are 2, 3, 4 on my list.
RAM is a really fun album. It is hurt by having a really weak song (3 Legs) and one too many rocking nonsense songs (Smile Away and Monkberry Moon Delight).
FLAMING PIE contains 3 of Paul's all-time best songs (Calico Skies, Somedays, and Little Willow) and some outstanding pop (Young Boy being the best) and a great appearance by Ringo (Beautiful Night). The rest is good, but not quite up to the level of those songs.
TUG OF WAR also has a very strong upside. One of Paul's very best (Wanderlust) and several just a tier below that (Tug Of War, Take It Away, Ballroom Dancing, Here Today, Ebony And Ivory-yes think it is great!). Hurt by 80's production at times.

I'm a big fan of Flaming Pie. Lots of great tunes, sense of fun, emotional weight, and he sounds sincere.

 

Actually, I probably listen to II the most
