The Kingsmen predate them. Plus the Standells had a Mouseketeer in their lineup. Too showbiz!

Edit: Actually, The Wailers predated the Kingsmen. They're probably the earliest garage rock group I can think of.

The earlier line-up of The Standells did not contain a Mouseketeer (Dick Dodd), but
did include a future Walker Brother (Gary Leeds).

I think I've said it before in a similar thread, but one of the main differences between 60s "garage rock" style punk and 70s punk is that teen angst (read horniness) got traded for nihilism or the political.

I guess you could say the The Modern Lovers sort of bridged that gap. Jonathan Richman obviously wanted to get laid but you pretty much knew he wasn't going to. The alpha male bravado was gone.

"Gee, Officer Krupke" from Berstein and Sondheim's West Side Story is the first punk song in my book.
New York street kids self depricatingly diss law enforcement officer's instantaneous condemnation of their ilk.

Garage rock could be pretty dangerous even before Mr. Osterberg.

I don’t care who “invented” punk.
But The Saints from my home town were top of the tree for me. :)

Remember folks, guitar solos were OUT as far as punk was concerned - which rules out Sabbath, Led Zep and even The Stooges if you think about it (though Iggy's influence is undeniable).

I'd give The Sonics the nod as the fathers of punk.

The Stooges brought it all together aesthetically and musically in one nihilistic, punchy blueprint.
Then one could argue all day long about precursors, but they were all "lacking" in one or more aspects.
