If they had put RFYL on the shelf and included "12-Bar Original" instead, then Rubber Soul could have been at the Revolver level of excellence. Seriously.

Even much better if they would have been able to work more on That means a lot and include a well produced version of this fine song.

Any best album list without any Radiohead is not one to take seriously.

So as hated as Maxwell's Silver Hammer is (and was by John and George), Abbey Road is #2 on this list.

So what if you deleted Maxwell and substituted Old Brown Shoe to give George one more track? I think almost everyone would think Abbey Road just improved. I still don't hate Maxwell (I have to admire a song about a serial killer) in spite of it's reputation. So you heard it here first - take out Maxwell, put Old Brown Shoe after Oh! Darling and you're all set.

Do you have the same reaction to "Hey Joe", or Neil's "Down By the River", or the racism or sexism of Bowie's "China Girl"?
The "Well, I'd rather see you dead, little girl than to be with another man" line is lifted directly from the Elvis song "Baby Let's Play House":

    "Well, listen to me baby
    Try to understand
Well, I'd rather see you dead little girl
Than to be with another man"

So it was more a homage to that song than anything else, but go ahead and continue to stand in righteous indignation, but I suspect your "convictions" are rather selective.

I personally don't even rate Pepper as high as it got in this poll. A great album, but vastly overrated in general (imo).
No surprise Revolver made number one, I have to agree it is the better album compared to Pepper.

While we're on the subject, why not The Smithereens "11" as well !

It's not so surprising, the results of this poll. After all, as we've seen definitively stated on this forum ad nauseum in recent years, Pepper is nothing but a bloated, overrated, fraudulent pile of steaming crap that's in reality one of the worst albums of all time. It was only acclaimed in its time because everyone was on drugs, maaaaaaaaaaaaaan.

(Do I think it's the greatest album of all time? No. But do I think it's deserving of *most* of the plaudits lobbed at it over the last 50 years? Absolutely).

"It is a first-person statement: 'Well, I'd rather see you dead, little girl than to be with another man' is the first line.."

Yes but you're making an assumption that I don't think you can make - and that is that John wrote the song from a first-person perspective. Art and literature is full of third-person narratives that are delivered lyrically from the first person reference. I do not think Elton John is an astronaut ( Rocket Man), nor do I think Johnny Cash was a cold-blooded murderer ( Folsom Prison Blues).

Am I to take it that you don't ever watch any Hollywood movies?

SPLHCB may not have been the #1 album of all time but over 50 years later and Pepper is still relevant as ever.

And hopefully it always will remain so, along with all of the Beatles work.

Four votes for Disintegration by The Cure, one of their worst albums! For some reason that LP caught a wave of depressed teenagers and took off but the writing was on the wall for Robert Smith. The preceding (and brilliant) Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me double LP had drained his songwriting abilities to such an extent that a good 50% of Disintegration is a bore fest. It's such a dull album but to some it's their 'best' and I will never understand why. Name me an older Cure fan who was into the band way before Disintegration who rates that album at all??

    Rant over.:D

I don't know of any older Cure Fans who rate it. We all think it's a bore fest save for two or three songs. For me it's one of Bob's worst.

  25. Sgt Pepper is a better album collectively, than the sum of its parts.

Nowhere near enough Harrison, for one, but that alone isn't my only issue with it.
