    I still haven't guessed who you're talking about, so I don't know.

I thought there would be no way I'd be the first one to use that joke in the thread, but it's so stupid that I suppose I can see why I'm the first.

They're in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, along with BTO, Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings.

Yeah, I think they should be considered. The Guess Who's music certainly has been time tested.
The influence criteria? I have no idea whether this or that band references them as an influence but if these musicians know the songs...that's gotta be counted. Or should be.

    No.
And unlikely to get a nom. what with a backlog of heavy hitters from that era still awaiting noms. and induction.
(Tull, Harum, Zombies, Love, pioneers Link Wray, Johnny Burnette, Dick Dale, etc to name a small few)
Also with hall inducting only 5 acts per year, and that the HOF wants to induct more 'current' acts, Rap, etc. This decreases the amount of older acts nominated and diminishing chances for induction.

I'm actually surprised they aren't in there already.

I voted no because I'd not heard of them. When I listened to their music, I could hear why.

Some of their songs are alright, but they're nothing special.

My criteria for a "hall of fame" requires the person/group to have been innovative, to have changed the direction, to have created notable landmarks in the chronology. They need to have achieved more than just doing their job reasonably well and consistently.

I see many become "hall of famers" in The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame (and similar organisations) simply because they have had a successful (but not noteworthy) career, usually over the longer term, and are still living.

So for the Guess Who - it is a "no" from me. I'm not a fan of the band, but do give them recognition for doing what they have done well, being popular and having hits that have a continued life on "oldies" radio. But I don't see them having achieved anything more than being successful - no artistic developments that changed the course of musical history.

I don't think they belong in the R&R hall of fame. They're alright, but, much like I said, nothing outstanding.

I guess you had to live in Canada or the USA to hear them regularly. I have no idea how popular (or not) they were across the pond.

Less when I was younger but more as I have aged, whenever I hear one of their songs, I always think, "What an amazing voice Burton Cummings has".

Going into this poll and knowing the demographic of the forum I thought 75% was definitely doable. Well....you Proper Strangers certainly did not disappoint! :tiphat:

So everyone has to say yes to the question asked by the thread poster?
If that's the case, that'd make him that bad when it comes to peoples opinions on subjective matters. Especially when I said they're alright.

I really started exploring their catalog a couple of years ago. Once Randy Bachman left, they weren’t close to bring the same band. They put out a string of very average to fairly bad albums that ended up in the cut out bins almost immediately. I’m not sure why Burton Cummings was determined to become a soft rock balladeer/lounge singer, but that’s where he was at. They do have some great stuff, but they have a lot of very marginal stuff too. I’d say they’d be iffy at best.

Aaaand.....this is why the R&R hall of fame is a joke.

I always look to commercial sales rankings to tell myself what to like. The definition of nightmare is liking a band or artist until you see their ranking isn't high enough. So you have to dislike them.
