Jim Marshall was pretty great. He lived as his subjects did. And he pre dates the rock thing. Lots of cool jazz photos too. He had a Phil Spector gun crazed drugged out threatening side too. Some of his photos were just magic. He was, there, at a real cool time and captured it simply. Very little, gear or technology. Just cool photos that capture a moment. Some of his crowd photos of the neighborhoods in the city, like the panhandle and lower Haight just capture the people so interestingly. Just the stoney Hendrix photo in the park is enough really. ;)

Halfin didn't do the artwork, he's just on there as creative "consultant". In any case this is about best photographers not best graphic artists or creative consultants. Can't recall who took those photos though.

Eddie Kramer, because he brought his camera when he recorded.
Robert Mapplethorpe shot the cover of Patti Smith's Horses album.

Annie and the higher-ups at RS did NOT want Yoko on the cover at all, but the only way John would agree with it was if it was a joint shot. This has been corroborated by Annie herself.

I know, but still he is not in the same league as most of the photographers mentioned above(and HTWWW remains the ugliest Zeppelin album cover art )

It's not all rock and roll but Lee Friedlander's book American Musicians is crammed with great photographs.

I don't think there's a "best" photographer any more than a "best" guitar player. There's one in every crowd... Of the ones already mentioned I'd pick out Annie Leibowitz, Mick Rock, Fin Costello and Charles Peterson in particular. And then there's Jini Dellaccio.

Although he hated being called a rock photographer. “Ansel Adams is a rock photographer, “- Jim Marshall.
