"Rio," then the 90's "Duran Duran" [Wedding album.] Then "Paper Gods" from the 2000's.

    rio, all the way, 100%.

this is what defines duran duran, their biggest hits to me. the one that made the most impact.

the best artwork, mixes, sound, the videos, everything about it is classic. their first album is 2nd best.
after that all the others are downhill.

yes, they have some singles here and there that are decent, but nothing matches their early output.

i have several copies of rio, in different formats (even 8 track tape, and reel to reel), and never get tired of listening to it.

i'm glad i've seen them a couple of times live, and hopefully someday, maybe they'll tour an
    play the entire album live.

a good super deluxe edition would be nice, even with the remasters out.

The Wedding Album, no apologies. But of course Rio is a sentimental favorite.

Rio is the band's tour de force. There isn't a single song on this album I would get rid of, even "My Own Way", despite the band's (or at least Simon's) dislike of it. They all just fit so well together to create the ultimate pop rock record, from the bright and colorful title track to the dark and eerie with "The Chauffeur". The latter and "Save a Prayer" are perhaps the two best things that the band have ever written.

Not too far behind would be the debut, which has some absolutely stellar album cuts ("Anyone Out There", "Night Boat", "Friends of Mine") on top of the already great singles. I only wish I could one day get the very rare Sonopress CD with the original tracklist. Besides those two, I like the majority of the rest of their 80s output and some singles from the 90s, but those first two records were really something quite special.

I chose Rio though the debut is great, too. Seven is pretty solid as well—Simon’s vocals are stellar on this one. I think Notorious is not as consistent as the first 3- perhaps due to the change in line-up?

There are some tracks on Paper Gods I really like.

I am going to say Rio followed by Big Thing.

All You Need Is Now is great and Red Carpet and Paper Gods are both good. I prefer them over the Wedding Album and Liberty.

I am listening to All You Need Is Now album again and it is pretty good overall. I could say it comes to second place for me. Girl Panic makes it weak though. And after The Man Who Stole a Leopard, it loses me big time.

Dumb question but is there such a thing as a DD song with lyrics that are not sung by Simon? There has to be that Nick track somewhere.

Question for the debut on cd: Are versions that include "To The Shore" rare? And why?

I spent a long time scouring ebay and it's extremely rare. And it's the early 90's pressing that's the one you want. Great sound and original track listing. There's a 2003 remaster that has the original track listing but apparently the SQ is not great. The list of all the various releases from Discogs below for some reason doesn't have it listed. It does have a 1994 Parlophone issue which includes "To The Shore" as well as "Is There Something I Should Know". Perhaps that's the best option even though it's not the original track listing

I voted Astronaut. Really sounds like a 1980's album but with modern production values. Sounds like a full band effort too-very live and organic. Plus, there's not a clunker on the album.

    (Oh, Medazzaland)
I have a problem, they said they can solve
    Soon I won't speak
I have no words left in me
    I dream in pictures
    But the sound is muted
I have no way to understand what they say
    (Into Medazzaland)
    People are starting to talk
But I don't hear them anymore
    Now I can't see
But I am still able to think
Do I have any feeling left?
What are they saying about me?
Do they really understand what's wrong?
I feel their hands on my skin
The time has come for them to begin
    I'm sinking deeper and deeper
    Into Medazzaland
I can feel the scalpel on my skin
    It's cutting in
    Deeper and deeper
    I'm in Medazzaland
    (Oh Medazzaland)

The first CD release of the debut that I'm aware of with To The Shore is the 90s "CDPRG" issue which has it tacked on at the end (Duran Duran - Duran Duran ). I think that CD sounds very good but haven't done extensive comparisons. I can post a sample if anyone's interested. I'm very interested in hearing if there was a CD release which includes To The Shore that came before that one. And no, the US Come Undone CD single doesn't count since it has an alternate version of the track. :p

There were apparently CDPRG reissues of Rio through Big Thing (minus Arena) that came out around the same time but I haven't heard any reports on those. Anyone have any of those?

I'm going to find this because I see DD cds all the time in these 3€ cd bins. Plus: "Is There Something I Should Know" doesn't fit.

Yeah, I think the reissue would have made more sense with the original UK tracking and Is There Something I Should Know tacked on the end (if included at all).

I'm almost certain there is an early CD version with the original track listing. The one you mentioned has it but in the wrong order and it includes "Is There Something I Should Know". Which as mentioned sounds out of place on the debut.

I'm also pretty positive there is an old EU EMI cd with unaltered original tracklist. But I could be wrong.....

But the first thing I knew of "Is There Something" on the debut was when I bought an US vinyl pressing of "Duran Duran" without checking the tracklist properly. Imagine my surprise.....
