    ...The Dandy Warhols Come Down.

I heard the Last Junkie Single in a record shop and bought the album on import immediately, but it is not the singles (also Boys Better and Every Day Should be a Holiday) that makes this my favourite album of the 1990s, it's the whole package. Extraordinary start with "Be In" (the very start shared by the BJMs Supersonic) and still used at the start of many of their concerts. Hard on for Jesus was my favourite track for a long time and a live version was my text alert.

The album is still amazing if you've never heard it.

There were a select batch of great records that year, but looking through my library today, it was kind of a disappointing year. A lot of the then-new albums I remember listening to a lot around the time I learned to drive (summer of '97) were actually 1996 albums that were late arriving in the States (Kula Shaker, Mansun). And a few albums I liked quite a bit, but don't rank up there with the best of the year, or best of that artist (INXS' Elegantly Wasted, Depeche Mode's Ultra, Faith No More's Album Of The Year, Cheap Trick '97). And then Blur's self-titled, which has some good songs, but also signaled where I sort of got off the Blur train.

Some genuinely great albums from '97 that I still love though:

    The Verve - Urban Hymns
    Oasis - Be Here Now
    Megadeth - Cryptic Writings
    Paul McCartney - Flaming Pie
Spock's Beard - The Kindness Of Strangers
Bob Dylan - Time Out Of Mind
    Marillion - This Strange Engine
    The Orb - Orblivion
    U2 - Pop
The Corrs - Talk On Corners

I used to keep that vinyl cover up on my wall in one of those LP frames, along with a few others, it got rotated in and out but was up a lot, not sure what made it so special to me, but always loved the cover. The album is pretty good too. They have some other good covers too.
