    Chronologically

Gene - Drawn To The Deep End
    Blur - Blur
Mansun - Attack Of The Grey Lantern
Supergrass - In It For The Money
    Kenickie - At The Club
    Radiohead - OK Computer
    Spiritualized - Ladies & Gentlemen
    Tindersticks - Curtains
    Primal Scream - Vanishing Point
    The Verve - Urban Hymns

    Wow, quite British...
This is also the year I graduated from secondary school, went to university, discovered The Smiths and listened to Tori Amos' "Hey Jupiter" on repeat because I had a massive crush on Monique, fan of Boys For Pele in general and this song in particular. I still get a lump in the throat when I hear it.

    Mogwai - Young Team
Godspeed You Black Emperor - F#A#
    Super Furry Animals - Radiator
    Labradford - Mi Media Naranja
    Bardo Pond - Lapsed

That's what you get from writing lists on boring parties:whistle:

I nearly added the SuperGrass one!!

Re the Oasis selection - I always think there are at least 3-4 excellent tracks on each of their albums. On this one:

Do you know what I mean
    My Big mouth
    I hope, I think, I know
    Fade In-out
It's Getting Better (man) - though it does go on a bit!!

Yep, So Long and Thanks For All The Shoes is one I've stupidly missed off my list. Good call.

Well I love 'Do You Know What I Mean' and 'All Around the World', but I skip the rest of the CD. It was just a case of too much drugs(or the wrong drugs) is not a good thing. The hype was bigger for this album than any others in 1997, as I recall, and it fell flat on delivery. I actually liked 'Standing on the Shoulders of Giants' and 'Don't Believe the Truth' albums though.

    Oasis - Be Here Now
    Incubus - S.C.I.E.N.C.E.
Everclear - So Much For The Afterglow

Not a great year for music, imo. For me it kind of signals the beginning of the end of modern rock.
Some ok stuff, but nothing I'd put up with the best of the best.

Sorry about the off topic, but since I did my navy service between June 1997 and May 1998 I'd like to share a list of songs I remember hearing most on the radio that year:
    Babylon Zoo - Spaceman
Maria Montell - And so the story goes... (di da di)
The Rolling Stones - Anybody seen my baby?
U2- Hold me, thrill me, kiss me, kill me
Sheryl Crow - Tomorrow never dies
    The Verve - Bittersweet symphony
Down Low - Johnny B (rap version of the Hooters song)
    Meredith Brooks - Bitch
Celine Dion - My heart will go on
Elton John - Candle in the wind (Princess Diana tribute version)

I think we're seeing what a great year 1997 was. I used to say it was the best year of music since the late 1960s and I think this thread shows it. 1998 and 1999 were also very strong years. It is really very, very sad to compare it to now when we have as corporate a music industry as we've had since the 1950s, independent voices struggle to be heard. It was the variety, not everything was good but there was something for everyone and that's surely how it should be. You also heard that variety on the radio, in pubs, now it's not allowed.

I'd never heard of "Built to Spill" enjoying the album. I don't think they had much profile in the UK.

As I mentioned "Dandy Warhols Come Down" was the big discovery for me in 1997 and I've seen them live many times since but I bought a lot of albums.

"In it for the money" by Supergrass and "Tellin' Stories" by Charlatans came out the same day! Blur by Blur, The Verve and so on.

No doubt a 1998 thread soon. Including the worst album I ever bought, one I couldn't even give away.

Depeche Mode's Ultra came out the week before (April 14th) and Nick Cave's album the previous month.
I was working in HMV at the time, and it was a very dark and muted coloured Chart Wall of all those new releases.
