My sister has that one. Sound is good, but I bet an original pressing or early CD would be better - this edition could use some more dynamics. But overall, it's still a satisfying listen, so if you find it cheap, get it (for the extras alone) :righton:

Oh yeah, and the album per se is amazing!

Thank you. I know the album since it was launched.
The problem is that I was never pleased with the random CDs that I put my hand on.

I decided to buy it now - and I simply do not know which release to get...

There are better options. If you like downloads get the hi-res Deluxe Edition, it betters the CD for sure and features longer edits of the live stuff from disc 2

Oh well - This is the message I get from HDtracks
"This product is not currently available due to region restrictions"

    So? What to do?

I’m not certain, but I believe that’s the same CD - mastered by our host - that’s been in print in Canada forever.

It’s very good. Only the original Made in Japan CD (same mastering; different levels) and the Japan SACD (and any redbook versions from the same source - if there are any) are arguably considered its digital equal.

This may be the single most popular topic in the history of the SteveHoffman forum if you want to research it further...

I think that the Canadian version of "Steve's" mastering is inferior to the US version. Details elsewhere, but the Canadian CD has been tweaked vs Steve's real mastering. The low end has been bumped up a smidge, and digital silence was added in between all the songs, and there is a glitch in WGFA.

Didn't know that, now I'm even more confused :).

(I got the Cinram Canadian MCABD 37217 from HMV Canada some 9 years ago thinking it was the real deal at 43:26).

Most people think the Canadian CD is just an analog copy of Steve's US digital mastering. It is not. Most people have not listened to them side by side. :)

The Canadian CD is more dynamic than the US mastering. But it is not really Steve's mastering. The low end has been boosted a little, and digital silence has been inserted in between some of the songs, and there's a glitch in WGFA:

Which versions of 'Who's Next' were mastered by Steve?

I finally arrived to liking the sonic presentation of this one the most. I can't remember if it has any flaws but I don't really care because it just sounds the best to me.

What is your evidence the Canada version had the EQ tweaked? To me, the only difference with the Canada version is the silence between tracks and the relative amplitude - with peaks not being modestly clipped.

When volume matched, I prefer the Canada version - slightly. It breathes a little better.

Eq subtraction tells the tale. I will dig it up ... I forgot, the highs are rolled off too:

Criminy, hopefully one of those works ...

    Hi Kevin,

Don't bother if want the Correct edits of the tracks like Baba O'Reilly and Behind Blue Eyes. However, if amateurish revisionist fade ups are your thing then the P33P and the WG Polydor matrix 813 651-2 01 will fulfill that desire. :)

I did not mention the SQ quality on the above discs as both have been tampering with by removing music and introducing fade-ups which for me constitute an avoid.

    I'm still here. ;)

Meh, everything I've thrown up against Steve's original US disc, has not usurped it. The SHM came close. There was one early mastering that came close too (Jpn for US? I'd have to look). What I wouldn't give for an fully dynamic version of Steve's original mastering!

I wouldn't sweat it Kevin. Been a while since I've done this, but if you run the analog out (i.e. post DAC) of a mildly clipped CD back through an ADC and then check the dynamic range of that file, it will be a pretty close match to the non-clipped version. The conversion to analog interpolates those small clips back into a full waveform... this is not the case however with heavily clipped files- there just isn't enough information for the converter to properly reassemble the wafeform and you get reduced dynamics along with audible distortion.

Just enjoy the gift of Steve's mastering prowess, man! ;)

I don't mind the remaster/remix, but its not the best option sonically. However its worth picking up for the bonus tracks. (Though I only have the single disc version.) I have that and an old Hoffman disc. Hoffman for sound, single disc remix for bonus tracks.

This is interesting. I wouldn't have thought to do it that way, but I get what you're saying. One analogy (!) could be, the sometimes incrementally higher dynamic range of an lp rip vs a CD of the same exact mastering. Neat.
