Good god, man! You've skipped the entire Julia Nagle electro phase of the late 90s! Get on it!

I didn't skip it. I stuck with the Fall until 1997 but after one underwhelming album after another I finally had had it. I checked out the occasional later Fall album but was always underwhelmed.

Right now I'm wondering if we now will finally be seeing MES on the cover of MOJO or Uncut.

Haha.... that's less than 50% of The Fall's official discography.

I'm hoping for an Uncut Ultimate Music Guide. Loads of albums to review and Mark E. Smith always gave great interviews and quotes. I think it would sell surprisingly well as not much has been wrote on them, not many books, and Fall fans are obsessive!

Wow, hard to recognize the man in that pic. Still I think he's a total trooper for doing those final shows, seemingly unstoppable. A true artist if there ever was one.

yeah, that would be great. There have been quite a few Fall related books but things like A Users Guide to The Fall are out of date by now.

I listened to the Slates EP earlier, and it still sounds as good as it did when I first heard it.

As this is the Steve Hoffman forum, I should just say that the best format for listening to The Fall is still the same as it has always been - taped off the John Peel show and then transferred to a compliation cassette on a tape to tape machine. Sounds fantastic. CDS, vinyl etc don't quite have the same feel.

Hats off and glasses raised in tribute to MES... Rest in peace you old curmudgeon.

The Fall harken to mind this appropriate slogan from Alexander Keith's Brewery:

Those who like it, like it a lot!!

A good friend of mine is a free improvising jazz musician. He plays with a lot more technique and instrumental mastery than what was happening in The Fall's music, and to much smaller audiences and fewer record buyers. He once said to me, 'You know Alan, what's really hard is to be truly great or truly awful. It's mediocrity that's easy'. I think of that bit of wisdom a lot when I think about people like Mark E. Smith, bless him. So much integrity and intelligence, so much dismissal of fashion and flash. I saw a video last night of Jeff Beck with one of his most recent ensembles playing Hollywood Bowl. No doubt a great musician, but how do you avoid becoming an oldies act? Jeff hasn't solved that problem. Mark E. Smith solved it every night. Do something astonishing.

Interesting you should mention Jeff Beck, check this interview from 1982, about 50-odd seconds in...

Wow! I've not been on the forum for a few days, and I only read this news right now, right here. Not on any news, not on Facebook (I obviously have the wrong "friends"...or should I say "frenz"?).

    Anyway...I'm shocked-ah!
