After reading the 10 best solo beatles album thread, I was thinking, Is it possible to put together a fantastic Beatles album from their very best solo tracks that would rival their best album? (Revolver or Rubber Soul or Pepper). Are their any tracks from their solo years, that could do this?

Most critics put "A Day In The Life", as the pinnacle of their work. Is there any track to rival this? And are there about 12 tracks that could rival their best.

I've heard the Black Album, but this would be 10 or 12 tracks only.

My opinion is Yes. Take 4 of Lennon's best, 4 from McCartney, 2 from George and 2 from Ringo, from the early 1970s and it's possible.

Lennon: Imagine, Oh My Love, Love, Jealous Guy. McCartney: Every Night, Bluebird, Band On The Run, Dear Boy. Harrison: My Sweet Lord, What Is Life, All Things Must Pass, Be Here Now. Ringo: It Don't Come Easy, Photograph. You have a terrific album here, I think.

    Anyone else think so?

    Sure I'll play along.

I sort of rushed this but here's my attempt.

    Band on the Run (1973)

    Side One:
    1. Instant Karma! (Lennon/McCartney)
    2. Too Many People (Lennon/McCartney)
    3. My Sweet Lord (Harrison)
    4. It Don't Come Easy (Starkey)
    5. Another Day (Lennon/McCartney)
    6. Love (Lennon/McCartney)
    7. All Things Must Pass (Harrison)

    Side Two:
    8. Imagine (Lennon/McCartney)
    9. Maybe I'm Amazed (Lennon/McCartney)
    10. Photograph (Starkey/Harrison)
    11. Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth) (Harrison)
    12. Jealous Guy (Lennon/McCartney)
    13. Isn't It a Pity (Harrison)
    14. Band on the Run (Lennon/McCartney)

No, because of one big reason. While it would be an album of great songs, it would not be an album of artistic progression as almost each and every Beatle album was, step by step. At best, it would rival their "lesser" (by comparison) albums like, say, BFS, Help!, Let It Be. And even there, it would be by a song-per-song comparison, only. Stylistically and atmospherically, even those three Beatle albums had a sense of 'difference" from the release prior to them. Save for POB, none of the solo albums (some great songs notwithstanding) have that eye/ear opening, "WOW! what is THIS??" factor.

I'll echo DK Pete and add that Beatles albums have 4 guys plus something intangible that makes the magic(not talking about Mr. Martin here.) I don't know what that is, but it's the reason we're still talking about the music after all these years.:)

Nonetheless, a solo compilation could never rival any real Beatles album

He had fewer number one songs. That was my criterion for making that comp.

If you extended the concept to include UK No.1s (as The Beatles ‘1’ album does), you could add ‘Imagine’ and ‘Woman’.

Your comp is a great effort but while they had some really good singles as ex-Beatles, less than a small handful fall into the category of "great' in my opinion. A while back i had picked up two Japanese CD comps which focused only on the singles (not just number ones). Once the track selection got past 1972 or 3, I have to say that it all got pretty boring. For one thing, the majority of songs were increasingly from Paul/Wings and once we get past the BOTR period, many (most) of *those* , in all honesty, were not all too great. But your comp does raise the idea that a joint solo track multi-CD set-particularly from the Apple years-would make for quite a nice release. And I'm assuming that legally it shouldn't be an issue either. Something like this has never been (officially) done; fans would eat it up.

To fatten it further, you could also add the singles that hit #1 in Cash Box that didn't hit the top in Billboard:

    Woman (already mentioned)
    Live and Let Die
    Let 'Em In
    It Don't Come Easy
    No No Song

This game will go out of style here. Just for fun I keep at the very early 70s. It's Harrison heavy showing the balance of power in the band at that imaginary moment of time..

Very nice track list! Though I would reverse sides 1 and 2...Love and All Things Must Pass would be a great closing sequence.

many of the track selections and albums in this thread are great, but wouldn't it have been cool for them to re-unite and record the "best of solo" songs as the Beatles? (or a live concert or tour where they did same)

    RAM...Plastic Ono Band?....uhm...no

They all had a few really good hits. But none of them fit together as an album. No matter how you configure the solo songs.

imo, their solo album efforts were ok albums that had some cool songs scattered here and there. And a handful or more of classic songs. They could have all done worse as solo artists I suppose.
