I think a 69-74 comp would be solid, like the Beatles 62-66/67-70. No LP mixing of the tracks is really cohesive like a regular Beatles LP.

I think this would absolutely and without a doubt be considered their best album of the 1970’s.

    Sounds fun:

    Side one-
    • Maybe I'm Amazed
    • What Is Life
    • Band On the Run
    • Jealous Guy
    • Junk
    Side Two
    • Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey
    • This Song
    • #9 Dream
    • Mind Games
    • Let Me Roll It (Included so John could say it fit his vocal style better so he should've sung it)
    • Bluebird

The problem with something like this is many fold. Production being one. Here you have this wall of sound from three of them and Paul being very sparse or way slick.

Paul, imo, would be the weak link. His big hit was My Love and then Maybe Im Amazed as far as being in the general time frame. I mean I like Coming Up for instance, but its from another age as far as what would fit together with the Lennon/Harrison/Starr classics.

Maybe Jet? But a very early 70s Beatles album would ultimately be McCartney weak.

After knocking the idea I could see George and Ringo kind of kicking the album off. I wanted Instant Karma at the first but it isnt a strong enough opener. Too much groove and not enough opening rocker.

I cant see Paul's goofy RAM Admiral Halsey song going on the album. I like it, but dont see it fitting. Maybe Band On The Run? But it would have to be reworked into a Lennon McCartney thing. Or start as one. I dont know, as I said, imo Paul is the weak link in this as far as hits fitting together.

    1) What Is Life?

    2) It Dont Come Easy

    3) Instant Karma

4)Maybe Im Amazed (redone to include a more rougher Lennon input and harmony)

5)Band On The Run (Completely different as far as production and with Lennon's input. Which he probably hated the song anyway) But it could be a fun break in the midst of the seriousness.

    6) Jealous Guy

    7) My Sweet Lord

    8) My Love

    9)?

    10)?

    11) Imagine- heck of a song to end on.

Still not as good as the best Beatles album. Has too serious of a vibe to it. a lot of philosophy and little fun. Not Beatles. Best I could do though..

You could have had a lot of fun with some of Ringo’s singles, though.

While I realize that its not really the premise of this thread, its hard for me to get past the idea that these songs would all be somewhat to very different if the Beatles had stayes together. I keep imagining Paul and John harmonizing the chorus of "What Is Life?" and some "Dont Let Me Down" attitude of "Band On The Run" with John taking the second part of the song and the .."baaand on the ruuun" chorus being ripped and darker. Or something like that.

Would there have been some family type songs on there from Paul? They are all married with kids at this point.

I think IF they had stayed together then there would have been a couple of years break. Then Id like to think John and Paul would have had one really good light and dark song like they use to do. Kind of a When We Was Fab mixed with the fun of Admiral Halsey/Band On The Run. Something epic. A laugh at themselves and their past in a good natured way. Hell maybe have it fade into a version of Ringo's "Photograph" to go all out nostalgia. Watch the critics freak out. I dont know.

It would have been kind of cute if "Early 1970" was a Beatles song. Each Beatle could duet with Ringo on their respective verse. And at the end all four of them sing the last line together.

Such a different time the early 70s. John was all introspective and full of himself (well he kind of always was, but in retrospect he was a bit insufferable through a good portion of the 70s) and Paul was just trying too hard to be rootsy. They all seemed just a bit too serious. Maybe a bit of goofy would have stood the test of time more than we think.

I'm listening to this at the moment, and I realised I probably didn't sequence the songs very well... there's four ballads right in the middle (Love, All Things Must Pass, Imagine, Maybe I'm Amazed).

I like a 1975 Beatles solo compilation - it's amazing how thematically similar some of their work is at various times

    Side One
    1. Venus and Mars
    2. Rock Show
    3. Whatever Gets You Through the Night
    4. Dark Horse
    5. What You Got
    6. Letting Go
    7. Nobody Loves You When You're Down and Out
    Side Two
    1. Surprise Surprise
    2. Call Me Back Again
    3. Simply Shady
    4. Listen To What the Man Said
    5. #9 Dream
    6. Venus and Mars Reprise
    7. Goodnight Vienna

The end of Listen... segues into #9 Dream (like Listen to Treat Her Gently)

This is a great point. The full blown Spectorization of All Things Must Pass wouldn't sit well at all alongside the early McCartney solo output. While it is certainly possible to put together a great playlist of solo material from the early 70s, it's much harder to come up with something that sounds as cohesive as most Beatles albums did.

This is really good! Incredible how many excellent songs they recorded in the early 70s. I would personally make this set of tracks below the second LP and package them together as The Beatles: The Solo Years (1970-1974) ;)

    Side One:
    1. #9 Dream (Lennon/McCartney)
    2. Live And Let Die (Lennon/McCartney)
    3. What Is Life (Harrison)
    4. I'm The Greatest (Lennon/McCartney)
    5. Mind Games (Lennon/McCartney)
    6. Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey (Lennon/McCartney)
    7. Back Off Boogaloo (Starkey)

    Side Two:
    8. Jet (Lennon/McCartney)
    9. Give Me Some Truth (Lennon/McCartney)
    10. Beware of Darkness (Harrison)
    11. The Back Seat Of My Car (Lennon/McCartney)
    12. Whatever Gets You Through The Night (Lennon/McCartney)
    13. Bangla Desh (Lennon/McCartney)
    14. Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five (Lennon/McCartney)

I’m confident that it would be very easy to put together a solo Beatles comp that rivals their ‘Best’ Beatles work. Sheesh. Low bar much?
