I've been going through the series lately. A hell of an actor! Comedy, drama, the theater... nothing was out of reach for him.

He will be missed but he left an impressive legacy.

First saw him on that play that was aired on PBS.... "House Of Blue Leaves", I think was the title.

He won a Tony for that role. Never took home an Emmy for Frasier though. Wonderful comedic actor, he was in one of my favorite movies , The Broken Hearts Club, along with Timohy Olyphant, Zach Braff and Dean Cain.

He also had a memorable guest spot in a later episode of ER as a drag queen whose partner is dying. Sorry about the crap quality, but this is the only clip I could find. The entire episode can be found on Hulu. It's from season 13 and it's called "Somebody to Love."

I've been catching "Frasier" reruns lately, watching the show for the first time in years, and as good as the cast is, he might shine the brightest. At the very least, for me, his character is the linchpin and the core. RIP

I lived in the same town as John (Oak Park, IL) for a decade, and though I never ran into him, folks who knew John said he was a bit resentful that 'Frasier" would be all he'd be remembered for...

I would have thought he was much older than 77, considering that he didn't appear to be that young while on Frasier. But I guess it's called acting. Odd to think he was only 15 years older than Kelsey Grammer.

A lot of actors would kill just to be remembered at all.

I always liked his performance in Say Anything. It seemed like a difficult role, and he played it very well.

I remember Ben Stiller showing off on a talk show, with great pleasure, a photo of himself when he was a kid, and John Mahoney, backstage at a Broadway production.

    RIP Mr. Mahoney

My heart is broken again......He made the world better whenever my wife and I watched him. His role as Martin Crane reminds us of my own father, in great ways.

I remember Mr. Mahoney in Tin Men, Moonstruck and The Russia House, also......

So he was gay after all? When I looked on Wiki and online, I couldn’t find anything.

He was always a bit evasive about it, but there were a few interviews where he said he was.
