I thought he was great in Say Anything. That last scene with the daughter was really effective.

well peri already made a statement. kelsey was close to john because kelsey's own dad passed away when he was very young and john never had any kids and ended bonding with his on screen kids

I enjoyed watching him as a patient on the Gabriel Byrne HBO series, ‘In Treatment.’

I've been living in Oak Park for about 17 years now. I always heard that Mahoney kept a house here and I was always hoping I might see him in a restaurant or a store, never did though. I wonder if he he wintered in CA or somewhere else.

Ah this is sad news. I loved his character in Frasier. What rotten news to wake up to.

KinkySmallFace1991 Will you come back to me, Sweet Lady Genevieve?

I loved John as Marty Crane, sure. I loved him in Say Anything, too. I know he was in other things that I liked as well, but I can’t remember any right now. He was one of my favorites. This affects me deeply. RIP, Marty.

He sang in a season 11 episode of Frasier. The one where all kinds of weird stuff happens when each character dreams.

EDIT : it's called Freudian Sleep. Episode 14.

This news has choked me up. He came across as a great guy and Frasier was watched every day in our house at one stage. RIP

He was also in the movie Moonstruck, and in the Clint Eastwood thriller, In The Line of Fire.
It has been written that his performance in Moonstruck may have helped land him the role of Martin in Frasier.

What a blessing for him to have been such a major component of this great, well-balanced cast. Every one of 'em could handle whatever the writers and directors would throw at 'em. It was like, The Big Bang Theory the cast was assembled so well that, even if you didn't like the tightass scholar from the bar, even if you couldn't care less for the romance with Lilith, even if you had no affinity for talk radio or psychiatry, the chemistry held this thing together. And, to be the foil (and the wiser member) with the responsibility to set up the punchline for the others, well it's a gift from the Comedy Gods.

We don't get to know much about his family life, or the friends and loves he went on to bring into his life. We do know he apparently kept very busy working, so that says a lot about how many strangers and viewers and listeners (to his V/O work) and the "just folks off the street" that he charmed in the service to an artform he dedicated his life's work to.

Not gonna miss him, not gonna wish I knew him, not gonna say he was a tower of a man or an icon of his craft or that I came to love him.

I can tell you I liked what he did. And he will be remembered by most for that alone. And all-in-all, that's a pretty damned good gift he left us.
