I know it’s crazy. I was amazed at how good this sounded. Some of my records from the 60s starts distorting after 15 minutes already, and this has almost three times the length. On top of that, the deadwax area isn’t that small either. It’s probably possible because of DMM. I wish all records would be cut like that nowadays, but I believe cutting directly to metal is more expensive than using a lacquer. Also, probably this wouldn’t work if the music has more transients and more bass.
I’m sure an engineer has to master it differently, just as early digital recording needed different microphones to sound as warm as tape recording.
Now Playing... Reinhold Gliere's Symphony #3 (Ilya Mourometz) performed by Hermann Scherchen & the Vienna State Opera Orchestra (1952); CD #13 from The Westminster Legacy Collector's Edition box. I've never heard this piece (nor much other Gliere that I can recall) - I'm enjoying it...
I would not be surprised if both versions have been remastered to CD though I have not checked since Stravinsky is not one of my favorite composers ...
Probably for his previous appointment with the BPO (that halo effect) and his nationality but he is no Colin Davis ...
I won't be rushing to the LSO if he is upfront. To be honest I struggled to find any of his programmes that I liked the look of in the forthcoming season ...
I read somewhere Rattle has been instrumental in getting the BPO to perform many modern works, aka "modern" classical music, that genre of music I simply do not care for and it was a waste of the BPO talents IMO ...
Back to my old tapes... I pulled out this performance by Entremont/Bernstein of the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto #1 -- recording released in 1962. A warhorse, for sure, but I'm in the mood for it today. Just finished the first movement; I'd forgotten how good this performance (and recording) was.
First listen to CD 8 from "The Choir Of St. John's College Cambridge - The Complete Argo Recordings" directed by George Guest on Decca. Benjamin Britten: Rejoice In The Lamb Missa Brevis A Ceremony Of Carols
Just got this last week, very impressed with his playing (as in his Ravel recordings) and the sound is terrific.
CD from the Decca Sound-The Analogue Years box. Includes the Unfinished. Good performances, but the brass is a little on the shrill side.
First listen to CD 21 from "RCA Living Stereo Vol. 1". "Brahms - Piano Concerto No. 1" performed by Arthur Rubinstein with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra led by Fritz Reiner.
Here is my deck specifically for playing these pre-recorded classical music reels. Unfortunately, it is not connected at the moment ...
